Sony has given the Xperia 1 VIII a sharper identity at a time when most flagship phones look increasingly similar. The new model stands out not only because of its redesign, but also because its camera system now places three 48 MP sensors at the center of the story.
The phone has already launched in Japan and the UK, pairing its new hardware direction with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and an early-buyer bundle that includes Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones. For Sony, the Xperia 1 VIII is less about following premium trends and more about reinforcing the design and imaging traits that have long defined the Xperia line.
A new design language with familiar Xperia traits
Sony calls the updated look “ORE design,” a name inspired by its Mark camera line. The company says the approach is meant to reflect natural materials and raw gemstones, and that idea is now visible in the Xperia 1 VIII’s bodywork.
The most obvious change is the abandonment of the older camera module. In its place, Sony uses a squircle-shaped camera housing positioned slightly to the side, combined with a textured rear panel and a brushed aluminum frame.
Even with the redesign, Sony has kept several hallmark Xperia features intact. The phone still includes a 3.5 mm Hi-Res audio jack, a two-stage physical camera shutter button, and expandable storage support.
Three 48 MP cameras take the lead
Sony’s biggest upgrade lands in imaging, where the Xperia 1 VIII brings a new rear setup built around three 48 MP cameras. The company is also pushing a more aggressive AI Camera Assistant to help guide photo capture.
That feature runs on Xperia Intelligence and can analyze the subject and weather conditions before suggesting settings such as color tone, lens choice, and bokeh effects. Sony is clearly leaning on both hardware and software to keep its imaging identity visible in the flagship segment.
The rear camera system consists of a 48 MP main camera with ZEISS Exmor T and OIS, a 48 MP ultra-wide camera with a 104-degree field of view, and a 48 MP telephoto camera with 2.9x zoom and a 70 mm focal length. Sony says the new telephoto sensor is four times larger at 1/2.56 inches.
On the front, the Xperia 1 VIII uses a 12 MP selfie camera with an Exmor RS mobile sensor.
Display and performance stay in premium territory
The front of the phone features a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Sony protects the screen with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and keeps the familiar 19.5:9 aspect ratio used across the Xperia family.
It also includes a 240 Hz touch sampling rate, Creator Mode, 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, ITU-R BT.2020 or REC.2020 support, a D65 white point, 10-bit tonal gradation, and X1 for mobile. Those additions reinforce Sony’s focus on viewing quality and multimedia use.
Performance comes from Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 4.1 storage. That combination places the Xperia 1 VIII firmly in the upper tier of Sony’s flagship lineup.
Battery, durability, and connectivity round out the package
Sony equips the device with a 5,000 mAh battery. Charging support includes 30W PD over USB-C and 15W wireless charging via Qi.
The Xperia 1 VIII also carries IPX5 and IPX8 water resistance, along with IP6X dust resistance. Sony adds Xperia STAMINA protection to help extend battery endurance during use.
Other hardware features include dual front-facing stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 LE, GPS, NFC, and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. The phone continues Sony’s habit of mixing premium hardware with practical features that are often absent from rival flagships.
Price, availability, and software support
Sony is taking pre-orders for the Xperia 1 VIII through its Japanese site and Sony UK. The starting price is set at 1,499 euros, and sales begin on May 14, 2026.
Early buyers will also receive the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones as part of the bundle. Out of the box, the phone runs Android 14, while Sony promises four years of software updates and six years of security updates.
