Honor’s Magic 9 is shaping up to be one of the more unusual flagship phones in development, largely because the front camera may become its most talked-about feature. The latest leak points to a 100MP selfie sensor that does not simply chase higher resolution, but is being tested for a square output that could give the phone a very different imaging identity.
That approach is notable in a market where flagship attention usually centers on the rear cameras first. In this case, Honor appears to be exploring a front-facing setup that feels more experimental, with the final image reportedly cropped to a 1:1 aspect ratio rather than using the sensor’s full native output.
A 100MP selfie camera with a square result
According to Digital Chat Station, the Magic 9 is being tested with the OVA0B 100MP front sensor, which uses a 1/1.8-inch size. The interesting part is not only the sensor itself, but the way the phone is said to handle the output in its final form.
Instead of delivering full-frame selfies, the camera output is reportedly cropped into a 1:1 aspect ratio. That would reduce the effective resolution and final pixel size, but it would also create a square selfie style that stands apart from what most flagship phones offer today.
This detail also matters because Oppo was previously mentioned as the first likely Android flagship brand to prepare a square selfie camera. Honor now appears to be pursuing a similar direction for the Magic 9.
Rear cameras are still being refined
The front camera may be getting the attention, but the rear setup is still under evaluation. Honor is said to be testing several 200MP main sensor options for the Magic 9, with the final choice not yet locked in.
Digital Chat Station names two candidates, OV52A and OV52B, both using a 1/1.28-inch format. A larger option, OVB0D, is also reportedly in the mix at 1/1.12 inches. That means the company is still deciding which sensor will anchor the final camera system.
Earlier information from the same leaker suggested a rear configuration built around a 200MP main camera with a 1/2.8-inch sensor. That older report also mentioned a 50MP ultra-wide camera, so the newer leak broadens the picture of what Honor may be testing behind the scenes.
Periscope zoom appears more settled
One part of the camera system sounds more consistent across the rumors: the telephoto module. The Magic 9 prototype is said to include a 64MP periscope telephoto camera based on the OmniVision OV64D with a 1/2-inch format.
The OV64D name has already surfaced in earlier Magic 9 leaks tied to the telephoto position. Seeing it appear again in a separate report suggests that this module may be one of the more stable elements in the phone’s current development stage.
Even so, the final camera layout is still not confirmed. Honor may continue adjusting the hardware before the device reaches its official launch.
Compact flagship body and large battery testing
Beyond imaging, the Magic 9 series is also being tested with a 6.36-inch OLED display. That size points to a flagship that aims to stay premium while keeping the body relatively compact.
A large battery of around 8,000mAh is also reportedly under evaluation. If that capacity carries through to the finished model, it would become one of the phone’s strongest selling points in the premium segment.
The device is also said to be under testing with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 as its platform. Other expected features include IP68/IP69 protection and an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, adding to the impression that Honor is aiming for a full high-end package.
Video processing may get extra attention
Another interesting detail is the possibility of an ARRI partnership with Honor. That collaboration is said to relate to improved video processing and a more cinematic output for the Magic 9 line.
If that effort makes it into the final product, it would show that Honor is not focusing only on megapixel counts. The company also appears to be pushing video quality, which now matters just as much as still photography in the flagship segment.
For now, the Magic 9 is expected to arrive in China around October. Until then, the phone remains a work in progress, but the combination of a 100MP square selfie camera, a 200MP main camera under evaluation, and a 64MP periscope zoom already makes it one of the more ambitious upcoming flagships in rumor territory.
