Xiaomi is reshaping the meaning of a basic T-series phone with the Xiaomi 17T. Instead of reserving its strongest camera setup for the Pro model alone, the company is bringing a periscope telephoto system to the standard variant while keeping the device more compact for everyday use.
The move narrows the gap between the basic and Pro versions in a way that is unusual for the series. Xiaomi will introduce the Xiaomi 17T in Indonesia on June 2, 2026, with photography positioned as the main selling point.
Pro-level camera hardware on the basic model
Andi Renreng, Marketing Director of Xiaomi Indonesia, said the Xiaomi 17T is the first basic T-series phone to use a periscope telephoto camera with up to 5x optical zoom. He also noted that the entire Xiaomi 17T series includes a Leica 5x telephoto system with a 50 MP periscope structure and OIS.
That means the Xiaomi 17T and Xiaomi 17T Pro now share the same core camera arrangement. Both models come with a 50 MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS, a 50 MP main camera with OIS, a 12 MP ultrawide camera, and a 32 MP selfie camera.
Xiaomi says the Xiaomi 17T also inherits the Pro-level camera features found on the 17T Pro. Those include Leica UltraPure Optical Design, Leica 5x telephoto, and Leica Live Moment.
Zoom tools made for more than everyday portraits
The telephoto system on the Xiaomi 17T series goes beyond 5x optical zoom. It also supports up to 10x optical-equivalent zoom and AI Ultra Zoom up to 120x.
For closer subjects, Xiaomi adds a telemacro mode that can focus from as near as 30 cm. There is also a Stage mode designed for concerts or performances, while telephoto video recording can reach 4K at 60 fps.
Leica Live Moment is another notable feature in the package. The mode captures 1.5 seconds before and after the shutter is pressed, creating a result that feels closer to a moving image than a still photo.
A smaller body without giving up the camera focus
Outside the camera system, Xiaomi 17T takes a more compact direction than its predecessor. The display now measures 6.59 inches, which is smaller than the previous generation’s size that matched the Pro version.
That adjustment makes the phone easier to carry and more comfortable for daily use. Xiaomi describes the device as a fit for users who want a compact phone without sacrificing camera quality.
The strategy also shows a shift in how Xiaomi separates the basic and Pro tiers. Rather than holding back premium photography features for the top model alone, the company is putting a more advanced Leica experience into a more accessible T-series variant.
For users who want a smaller phone with a stronger camera identity, the Xiaomi 17T stands out as one of the most interesting options in the lineup. Its arrival in Indonesia on June 2, 2026 will be a key moment for seeing how the market responds to a basic model that now carries capabilities once closely associated with the Pro version.
