A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck 42 kilometers southeast of Palu, Central Sulawesi, and quickly turned a phone shop into one of the clearest scenes of the impact. A video circulating on social media showed rows of iPhones spilling from a display cabinet as the shaking intensified.
The incident drew wide attention because it captured how forceful the tremor was in a single frame. In the recording, the display shelves sway violently before dozens of phones drop to the floor within seconds.
Strong shaking reported across multiple areas
According to BMKG, the quake occurred on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 10:27:44 WIB. The agency said the epicenter was located about 42 kilometers southeast of Palu and confirmed that the event did not pose a tsunami threat.
Residents in several parts of Central Sulawesi reported feeling the shaking strongly. People in offices, shopping centers, and residential areas were seen rushing for safety as panic spread briefly during daily activities.
Phone shop footage shows the force of the tremor
The store video shows display cabinets shaking hard as the earthquake hit. Within moments, the neatly arranged phones on the shelves were sent crashing to the floor in a fast cascade.
The scene suggests the shop owner may face losses after many devices were knocked down during the quake. No fatalities were reported in connection with the incident.
People moved to open spaces
Beyond the phone store footage, other videos showed items inside buildings shifting and falling under the force of the tremor. In several locations, residents gathered in open areas while waiting to see whether aftershocks would follow.
The sudden shaking interrupted routine activity and prompted many people to pause before returning indoors. The reaction reflected the level of concern felt across the affected areas.
Monitoring continues after the quake
Authorities are still monitoring and recording the earthquake’s impact around Palu. Residents have been urged to stay calm, verify information through official channels, and follow updates from BMKG and other relevant agencies.
The quake once again underscored the need for preparedness in earthquake-prone areas such as Central Sulawesi. People were also reminded to check building conditions after a quake and keep evacuation routes clearly known to reduce risk.
