iPhone Air 2 Could Break Apple’s Usual Playbook, Camera Upgrade and A20 Pro Rumors Build

Apple’s iPhone Air lineup may be headed for an unusual leap in 2027, with the iPhone Air 2 now linked to a possible spring launch between March and May. If the current reports hold, the device could arrive with two features that are usually reserved for more expensive models: a dual-camera system and the A20 Pro chip.

That combination would place the iPhone Air 2 in a very different position inside Apple’s portfolio. Instead of being only a thin and stylish alternative, it could become a lighter premium option that still carries core hardware closer to the Pro family.

A different launch window from Apple’s usual September schedule

Apple typically unveils its main iPhone models in September, but the iPhone Air 2 is said to follow a separate timeline. The first iPhone Air also moved outside the standard annual cadence, and the second generation is reportedly being developed under the internal code name V62.

According to people familiar with the matter who spoke to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the iPhone Air 2 may launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 rather than the Pro lineup. That would continue Apple’s move toward a more spread-out product calendar.

Thin design, but a more capable camera setup

One of the defining traits of the original iPhone Air was its ultra-thin body, and that design direction is expected to remain intact. The bigger shift would come from imaging hardware, where Apple is reportedly planning to move from a single rear camera to a dual-camera array.

The rumored setup would pair a main camera with an ultrawide lens. That addition would broaden shooting options for landscapes, architecture, and group photos in tighter spaces, while also making the Air line feel much closer to Apple’s higher-end models.

If the hardware lands as expected, users could also see better low-light flexibility and, depending on sensor support, possible macro capabilities as well. The camera upgrade would be one of the clearest signs that Apple is trying to make the Air line more than a design-focused offshoot.

A20 Pro could bring Pro-level performance to a non-Pro phone

The most surprising rumor centers on performance. The iPhone Air 2 is said to use the A20 Pro processor, the same chip that is also expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro.

That would be a notable shift in Apple’s usual product segmentation, where regular and Pro models are separated by chipset class, graphics capability, and exclusive features such as ray tracing. A Pro chip in the Air series could also make the phone more appealing to buyers who want high performance without paying Pro-level prices.

The chip is also said to deliver 20% to 30% better power efficiency than the A19. In addition, it is expected to support AI acceleration for features such as Live Captions, Photo Cleanup, and a new-generation Siri experience.

Battery life remains a key question

Battery endurance is another area Apple is reportedly working on for the iPhone Air 2. It is not yet clear whether the improvement will come from a larger physical battery, a more efficient chip, or optimizations in iOS 21.

Because the phone is expected to remain extremely thin, expanding the battery size may be difficult. That makes chipset efficiency and smarter background management inside iOS 21 the most likely paths to better all-day use.

Pricing may move up slightly, but stay below Pro models

The original iPhone Air launched at around $699 to $799, and the second generation is expected to rise to about $749 to $849. Even with that increase, the device would still sit well below the iPhone 18 Pro, which is said to start above $1,099.

That positioning could make the iPhone Air 2 especially attractive in markets that are sensitive to pricing, including Europe and Southeast Asia. With dual cameras and a Pro-class chip at a lower entry point, the model could become one of Apple’s most interesting mid-premium options if the rumors prove accurate.

For now, however, the entire project remains unconfirmed. Apple has not announced the iPhone Air 2, and the V62 plan could still change, including a possible name shift or a delay to the dual-camera upgrade.
