iPhone 18 Pro Max Could Cost Apple More to Build, Memory Prices Stand Out

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max is shaping up to be one of the most expensive iPhones to manufacture, with component costs for the 1TB variant estimated to approach $900. That figure would place it far above the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is estimated at around $550 for the same storage tier.

The sharpest increase is tied to memory. NAND storage is said to be the biggest driver of the jump, followed by DRAM, putting pressure on the total bill of materials before the phone even reaches consumers.

2nm Chipset Adds Another Layer of Cost

Beyond memory, the A20 Pro chipset is also expected to push production costs higher. It is said to be Apple’s first flagship 2nm mobile chip, and the more advanced semiconductor fabrication and packaging process naturally makes it more expensive than the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Counterpoint Research also expects camera costs to rise slightly. At the same time, display and some other components may become a bit cheaper, which could soften part of the overall increase.

Selling Price May Rise, But Margins Could Stay Tight

Apple has not confirmed any details about the iPhone 18 lineup, but the market expects the company to avoid passing the full cost increase to consumers across every storage tier. A more likely approach would be uneven pricing between tiers to protect margins, especially for higher-capacity models.

Even if the average selling price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max rises by about $200, Counterpoint Research says the device’s gross margin could still end up slightly lower than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. In other words, a higher retail price may not be enough to fully offset the rising manufacturing bill.

Could Become Apple’s Most Expensive iPhone Line Yet

The pricing outlook also matches earlier IDC projections that the iPhone 18 series could become Apple’s most expensive smartphone lineup so far. IDC estimated that both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could rise by as much as $200 from the current models.

If that forecast proves accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could start in the $1,249 to $1,299 range, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max may land between $1,349 and $1,399. With cost pressures building and pricing strategies likely to vary by storage tier, Apple appears set to face a delicate balance between margins and consumer appeal.
