Huawei’s next tri-fold phone may take a major turn away from the Z-shaped layout used by earlier Mate XT models. A patent leak points to an inward-folding design that could keep the flexible display hidden when the device is closed.
The device is widely referred to as the HUAWEI Mate XT2, although Huawei has not confirmed the name or the product itself. The most important change is not simply the shape, but the potential reduction in exposure for the foldable panel during everyday carrying.
A Different Way to Fold Three Panels
The patent documents were shared by leaker Ice Universe on X on July 17, 2026. Images from the filing reportedly show a new panel arrangement and folding mechanism that differs from the Mate XT Ultimate and Mate XTs.
In the proposed layout, the large flexible display sits on the inside of the device. A separate cover screen appears to be positioned on the outer right panel for use while the phone is folded.
The folding sequence also appears to happen in stages. The left panel would fold inward first, followed by the right panel closing over it to create a more compact form.
Keeping the main flexible screen inside could limit its contact with surrounding objects while the phone is closed. The design may also help distribute pressure more evenly across the display and hinge area.
A circular camera module is shown on the center panel in the patent images. This placement would give the Mate XT2 a noticeably different appearance from Huawei’s existing Z-folding tri-fold devices.
Performance, Battery and Camera Rumors
Huawei is also rumored to be preparing upgrades beyond the folding structure. These details remain unconfirmed and should be treated as early information rather than final specifications.
| Area | Mate XT2 Rumor | Reference Mentioned |
|---|---|---|
| Chipset | Kirin 9050 Pro | Successor to Kirin 9010 and Kirin 9020 |
| Battery | More than 6,000 mAh | Mate XT Ultimate at 5,600 mAh |
| Cameras | 50 MP main, 50 MP periscope telephoto, 40 MP ultrawide | Similar approach to Mate X7 |
| Display use | Support for work on a 10-inch screen | Intensive multitasking |
The Kirin 9050 Pro is the chipset named in the rumor. A more advanced manufacturing process is said to improve power efficiency and AI acceleration capabilities.
Battery capacity could exceed 6,000 mAh, according to the leak. That would be larger than the 5,600 mAh battery used in the HUAWEI Mate XT Ultimate, a relevant change for multitasking on a large display.
The rumored camera system consists of a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP periscope telephoto camera, and a 40 MP ultrawide camera. The configuration is described as similar to the camera approach used by the HUAWEI Mate X7.
Other rumored features include a new-generation hinge intended to reduce visible crease marks and stylus support. Premium materials with a metallic finish and a dynamic light effect on the body have also been mentioned.
Possible October 2026 Introduction
GSMArena reported in April 2026 that the Mate XT2 could be introduced in October 2026. The timing is said to be close to the expected launch window for the HUAWEI Mate 90 series.
Indonesia has already received Huawei’s tri-fold phone lineup. The Mate XT Ultimate officially went on sale there on April 30, 2025, at Rp52.999.000.
The earlier model drew attention from professionals, content creators, and premium-device collectors. An inward-folding structure could give the Mate XT2 a distinct position in the tri-fold smartphone category if Huawei brings the design to market.
Still, a patent does not guarantee a commercial product. Huawei may change the final design, specifications, or announcement schedule as internal testing and production considerations continue.
