Samsung Bets on 2.8 Million Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide Units Before Apple’s Move

Samsung is reportedly planning to produce 2.8 million Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide units, giving the wide-screen foldable the largest allocation in its upcoming lineup. The figure suggests that Samsung sees the new book-style design as its leading bet before competition in the category intensifies.

The reported target is larger than the 2 million units planned for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and the 1.5 million units for the Galaxy Z Flip8. That production split points to a significant shift in emphasis toward a foldable that is designed to feel closer to a compact tablet when opened.

A 4:3 Foldable Takes Priority

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide is said to be Samsung’s first book-style foldable with a 4:3 inner display ratio. Its reportedly 7.6-inch inner screen would look more square than the tall designs associated with earlier Galaxy Fold models.

A wider layout could provide more usable space for multitasking, document reading, and video viewing. Samsung is also said to be preparing a 5.5-inch cover display for everyday one-handed use while the device remains folded.

The design could address criticism that tall foldables feel narrow when used in their closed position. At the same time, Samsung will need to establish demand for a 4:3 format that does not yet have a long sales history in the company’s foldable range.

Model Reported Production Target Expected Role
Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide 2.8 million units Wide 4:3 book-style model
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 2 million units Tall format with fuller features
Galaxy Z Flip8 1.5 million units More cautious production plan

Based on the reported figures, the Fold8 Wide target is about 40% higher than that of the Fold8 Ultra. Samsung appears to be treating the wider model not as a niche alternative, but as a potential new face of its foldable portfolio.

Launch Timing Matters

ETNews reportedly obtained the supply-chain information, which was cited by gadget.viva.co.id ahead of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide is said to be scheduled for an introduction on July 22, 2026.

Apple is reportedly preparing an iPhone Ultra with a wide display format for September 2026, around six weeks later. Samsung could therefore have an early opportunity to associate wide-screen foldables with the Galaxy brand before Apple’s expected entry.

A larger production run may also help Samsung meet early demand and sustain attention through product reviews and social-media discussion. However, a high volume plan also increases the importance of consumer response to the new form factor.

Reported Hardware Trade-Offs

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide is rumored to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, a 4,800 mAh battery, and a dual rear camera system without a telephoto lens. These details indicate that the wider shape may require compromises in battery capacity and camera hardware.

The 4,800 mAh battery is below the reported 5,000 mAh capacity of the Galaxy Z Fold7 Ultra. Limited vertical space for battery cells is cited as a consequence of the more horizontal device design.

Samsung is reportedly expected to offset that limitation through chipset efficiency, fast charging, and software optimization. Battery life could become a central test for the device because a larger internal display can encourage more demanding use.

Other Foldables Retain Distinct Roles

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is expected to carry forward the tall Fold format familiar from the Z Fold2 through Z Fold7 generations. Its 2 million-unit target suggests that Samsung still expects demand from buyers who prefer the established shape and a telephoto camera.

The lower Galaxy Z Flip8 target is linked to a more cautious inventory approach. Sales of Flip models have reportedly tended to slow after the initial launch period, making a smaller production plan a way to limit excess stock risk.

Samsung’s wider Fold strategy will ultimately depend on whether users value the extra workspace enough to accept its design compromises. The London unveiling is expected to provide the first clearer indication of how the company intends to position this new format.
