Xiaomi 15 vs Xiaomi 17: Key Differences and Minimal Upgrades for Compact Phone Fans

Xiaomi has introduced the Xiaomi 17 as an advancement over the Xiaomi 15, targeting fans of compact flagship phones. Both models maintain a similar physical footprint, but the Xiaomi 17 offers notable improvements in key technological areas.

The Xiaomi 15 debuted in China in October 2024 and entered global markets in early 2025. It features the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 17 launched in China in September 2025 and became available globally by early 2026, powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This accelerated release cycle highlights Xiaomi’s focus on rapid innovation for its flagship series.

Design and Build

Both smartphones prioritize compactness with almost identical dimensions. The Xiaomi 15 measures 152.3 mm in height, 71.2 mm in width, and 8.08 mm in thickness. The Xiaomi 17 slightly reduces height to 151.1 mm and increases width marginally to 71.8 mm, with a 8.1 mm thickness. Both weigh approximately 191 grams and carry IP68 water and dust resistance.

Xiaomi 17 incorporates Dragon Crystal Glass, improving drop resistance while keeping the weight stable. This engineering precision ensures users get enhanced durability without compromising the compact form factor.

Display Technology

The Xiaomi 15 sports a 6.36-inch LTPO OLED panel (M9), reaching a peak brightness of 3200 nits and supporting a 1–120 Hz refresh rate. The Xiaomi 17 uses an updated LTPO OLED (M10) panel at 6.30 inches with a higher peak brightness of 3500 nits, maintaining the same refresh rate.

Additionally, the Xiaomi 17 applies higher PWM dimming frequency, which reduces eye strain in low light conditions without affecting color accuracy. These upgrades contribute to a superior and more comfortable viewing experience.

Performance Enhancements

A major leap comes from the chipset evolution. Xiaomi 15 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite built on TSMC’s 3nm process, with a Prime Core running at 4.32 GHz and an Adreno 830 GPU. Xiaomi 17 upgrades to Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 using TSMC’s advanced 3nm technology, boosting the Prime Core clock to 4.60 GHz and employing the newer Adreno 840 GPU.

According to benchmark data, Xiaomi 17 achieves roughly 25% better performance in single-core tests and 24% in multi-core workloads compared to Xiaomi 15. The upgraded AI engine, Hexagon 2025, also advances machine learning capabilities, delivering smoother multitasking and app responsiveness.

Battery and Charging

Battery innovation is the standout upgrade in Xiaomi 17. It uses Silicon-Carbon battery technology, increasing capacity to 7000 mAh from Xiaomi 15’s 5400 mAh Li-Ion battery (China variant). This jump enables up to two full days of use on a single charge, a significant gain for compact flagship phones.

Charging speeds are enhanced modestly. Xiaomi 15 supports 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, while Xiaomi 17 advances to 100W wired and maintains 50W wireless power transfer. Reverse wireless charging doubles from 10W to 22.5W, improving power-sharing capabilities.

Camera Improvements

The Xiaomi 17 refines its Leica-tuned camera system by prioritizing image integrity over aggressive ultra-wide distortion. The main sensor advances from Light Fusion 900 to Light Hunter 950, expanding dynamic range from 13.5 EV to 16.5 EV.

The ultra-wide lens shifts from 14mm (115°) to 17mm (102°), enhancing edge sharpness and geometric accuracy. Telephoto focal length remains at 60mm (2.6x zoom). The front selfie camera resolution increases from 32 MP to 50 MP, delivering sharper self-portraits.

Software and Ecosystem

Xiaomi 15 launched running HyperOS 2, while Xiaomi 17 ships with HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. HyperOS 3 deepens ecosystem integration, connecting devices such as Xiaomi SU7 within Xiaomi’s "Human x Car x Home" framework for seamless smart interactions.

Notably, Xiaomi 15 users can upgrade to HyperOS 3 via updates on HyperOSUpdates.com or by installing MemeOS Enhancer, unlocking advanced system features and up-to-date app support.

Summary of Differences

  1. Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Elite (Xiaomi 15) vs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (Xiaomi 17)
  2. Battery: 5400 mAh Li-Ion vs 7000 mAh Silicon-Carbon
  3. Screen Brightness: 3200 nits vs 3500 nits
  4. Camera Main Sensor: Light Fusion 900 vs Light Hunter 950
  5. Front Camera: 32 MP vs 50 MP
  6. Software: HyperOS 2 vs HyperOS 3 (Android 16)

Xiaomi 15 solidified the compact flagship segment with strong hardware balance. Xiaomi 17, however, offers a structural leap with advanced chipset, substantial battery upgrades, refined optics, and improved software integration. The decision to skip the Xiaomi 16 branding reflects the scale of these enhancements rather than a minimal update. Fans of compact smartphones seeking the latest technology will find compelling reasons to consider Xiaomi 17 for a future-proof experience.
