Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, has launched the world’s first car with PS Remote Play technology integrated. The Afeela electric vehicle (EV) allows passengers to stream games directly from PS5 and PS4 consoles onto the car’s infotainment screen.
This feature uses the Afeela In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system to create a digital living room atmosphere inside the cabin. Passengers can access PS Remote Play anytime, even when the vehicle is moving. Meanwhile, drivers can use this feature only when the car is parked, ensuring safety compliance.
Requirements for Smooth Gaming Experience
To operate PS Remote Play, SHM specifies a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps. However, a connection speed exceeding 15 Mbps is recommended for a seamless and responsive gaming experience. This connectivity requirement underlines that Afeela is designed not just as an EV but also as a mobile entertainment hub.
Afeela and Honda’s EV Strategy
Unveiled at CES in January 2025, Afeela is positioned as a smart, quiet, and highly connected future vehicle. It shares its platform with Honda’s 0 Series EV lineup, which aims to launch seven models by 2031. Honda has earmarked a massive investment of around $40 billion (€55 billion) devoted to developing this series.
Key technical focuses include:
- Ultra-thin E-axle battery packs to save space
- Lightweight chassis design for improved efficiency and performance
Each 0 Series model, including Afeela, is expected to achieve a range exceeding 300 miles (483 km) per charge. Industry speculation points to a large 91 kWh lithium-ion battery pack for Afeela’s sedan variant.
