Google has officially expanded the call recording feature on its Pixel Phone app beyond the United States, making it available to more users in Europe. This broader rollout is set to continue until the end of February, with Google ensuring compliance with local regulations regarding call recording and user consent.
Reports indicate that users in countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, and France have already gained access to this feature. This move marks a significant global expansion ahead of the widespread market introduction of the Pixel 10a.
European Expansion and Regulatory Compliance
The call recording feature initially re-launched in September, with a phased rollout beginning in November targeting primarily U.S. users. Now, with the recent availability in multiple European nations, Google is responding to demand while abiding by varying legal frameworks.
Call recording laws differ across countries—some ban recording calls entirely, while others require that all parties consent to being recorded. Google addresses this by incorporating an automatic audio notification during calls, alerting participants that the conversation is being recorded. This measure aims to ensure that users stay within legal boundaries and respect privacy expectations.
Supported Devices and Software Requirements
This feature supports Google Pixel 6 and newer devices running Android 14 or later. Unlike AI-powered features such as Call Notes, which utilize the Gemini Nano model on newer Pixel phones, the call recording function is straightforward: it records audio without AI transcription or automated summaries. This distinction clarifies that the recordings are raw audio files without textual representation.
How to Enable and Use Call Recording on Pixel Phones
Users interested in activating call recording can follow these simple steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Call Recording under Call Assistance.
- Complete the initial setup process.
During a call, pressing the record button starts recording. A mandatory automated voice announcement plays to inform all call participants. Users can also:
- Set calls from unknown numbers to record automatically.
- Choose to delete recordings after 7, 14, or 30 days, or save them indefinitely.
- Access saved recordings on the main Phone app tab marked with a microphone icon, where playback controls are embedded.
Google’s Commitment to Enhancing Pixel Communications
This expansion reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to enrich communication features on Pixel devices while respecting the legal nuances of each market. By integrating safety and compliance mechanisms, the company balances technological advancement with privacy and user rights.
The availability of call recording on Pixel phones will grow globally by the end of February, a timeline coordinated according to local laws. This ensures users in eligible regions can benefit from enhanced call management tools on cutting-edge Pixel hardware.
