Huawei Pura 90 Raises the Camera Bar, 50 MP Periscope Zoom Leads a Broader Upgrade

Huawei has expanded the Pura 90 series in China with a standard model that puts camera hardware at the center of the conversation. The most notable upgrade is a 50 MP periscope telephoto lens, a move that signals a much more committed approach to mobile photography than the outgoing generation.

That emphasis is not limited to imaging alone. Huawei also pairs the phone with a larger battery, an LTPO OLED display, and strong durability ratings, giving the Pura 90 the profile of a device built for everyday use as well as more flexible shooting.

A clearer camera strategy

The rear camera setup uses three lenses arranged in a triangular module on the back. Huawei keeps the design simpler than the Pro variant, but the Pura identity remains easy to recognize.

The main camera carries a 50 MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. The biggest step forward arrives on the telephoto side, where Huawei has installed a 50 MP periscope camera with an f/2.2 aperture, a major jump from the 12 MP unit used before. An additional 12.5 MP ultrawide camera handles wider scenes.

On the front, the phone also receives a meaningful upgrade. Huawei uses a 50 MP selfie camera, replacing the 13 MP unit on the Pura 80 and giving video calls and self-portraits a much stronger specification.

Display and battery get meaningful attention

Beyond the cameras, the Pura 90 relies on a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED panel with a 2,865 x 1,320 resolution. The screen supports an adaptive 1-120 Hz refresh rate, which helps it stay smooth when needed and more efficient during lighter tasks.

Huawei protects the panel with Kunlun Glass. The company says this layer is meant to improve resistance against scratches and minor impacts in daily use.

Battery capacity also moves up sharply. The Pura 90 carries a 6,500 mAh battery, ahead of the roughly 5,170-5,600 mAh range seen on the older model. Charging support is equally aggressive, with 100W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

Kirin chipset and memory options

Inside, the phone runs on the Kirin 9010S chipset built on a 7 nm process. Memory configurations include 12 GB and 16 GB of RAM, while internal storage goes up to 512 GB.

That combination places the Pura 90 as a model that balances photography, endurance, and storage rather than chasing only one headline feature. Even as the standard version in the lineup, it still arrives with enough hardware to stand on its own.

HarmonyOS and durability

The software side follows Huawei’s own ecosystem, as the Pura 90 runs HarmonyOS 6.1 instead of Android. As a result, it does not include direct access to Google Mobile Services, including the Play Store and YouTube.

Huawei Mobile Services through AppGallery serves as the main alternative. Google services can still be reached through a browser, which leaves an indirect option for users who need them.

Durability is another area where the phone is positioned strongly. Huawei gives the Pura 90 IP68 and IP69 certification, covering dust, high-pressure water spray, and submersion up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

Price and availability

For now, Huawei is selling the Pura 90 only in China. Available color options include black, white, and purple.

GSM Arena lists the prices at 4,699 yuan, 5,199 yuan, and 5,699 yuan for the higher-tier version. With its 50 MP periscope telephoto camera, 50 MP front camera, 6,500 mAh battery, and IP68/IP69 protection, the Pura 90 shows that the regular model is no longer treated as a secondary option in the series.
