Huawei’s next tri-fold flagship is already drawing attention before any official announcement, with leaks pointing to the Mate XT 2 as the company’s follow-up to its foldable experiment. The device is said to be nearing an October launch window, and the rumored upgrades suggest Huawei is aiming to make the format more practical for everyday use.
The latest information comes from a Weibo post by tipster Hyperdimensional Realm, as cited in the reference report. Huawei has not confirmed the device or its final specifications, so the current picture still depends on leaks rather than official details.
A tri-fold line that keeps evolving
If the rumors prove accurate, the Mate XT 2 will continue Huawei’s tri-fold strategy that began with the Mate XT Ultimate Design. That original model arrived in China in September 2024 and later reached global markets in February 2025, while Huawei also followed it with the Mate XTs in China in September 2025.
That release pattern shows the company is still pushing the tri-fold concept forward. Rather than treating it as a one-off design, Huawei appears to be refining the category step by step, with each model expected to improve on usability, durability, and performance.
Chipset upgrade is expected to lead the changes
One of the most notable leaks suggests the Mate XT 2 could run on the Kirin 9050 Pro. The chip is said to bring better performance and stronger on-device AI capabilities than the generation before it.
For a tri-fold phone, that kind of upgrade matters more than it would on a conventional handset. The device has to handle switching between phone and tablet modes, multitasking on a larger canvas, and the heavier demands of a folding display system.
The Mate XT Ultimate Design used the Kirin 9010, paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. That hardware set a high starting point, which explains why expectations for the successor are already rising.
Battery capacity may grow to match the larger screen demands
Another reported improvement centers on endurance. The Mate XT 2 is said to feature a battery above 6,000mAh, which would be a step up from the 5,600mAh unit inside the Mate XT Ultimate Design.
That increase makes sense for a device built around a large foldable display. A tri-fold panel can create a far more demanding power profile when fully opened for work, entertainment, or app switching, so a larger battery would help support longer sessions.
The previous model supported 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. However, there is no official word yet on whether Huawei will keep the same charging speeds for the new model.
Camera hardware is also tipped for a premium push
The camera system is expected to remain part of Huawei’s premium focus. According to the leak, the Mate XT 2 may offer imaging capabilities on the level of the Mate X7 series, although the exact sensor setup has not been revealed.
Earlier reporting points to a possible 50-megapixel main camera joined by ultrawide and telephoto lenses. That direction suggests Huawei is trying to avoid treating the tri-fold design as a compromise device, especially for buyers who expect flagship-grade photography alongside the flexible display.
The Mate XT Ultimate Design already carried a 50-megapixel main camera with variable aperture and OIS. It also included two 12-megapixel cameras for ultrawide and periscope telephoto duties, so the successor would need to build on an established camera baseline.
Hinge refinements and stylus support could define daily use
The hinge is another area where changes are reportedly coming. Huawei is said to be improving the folding mechanism to strengthen durability, stabilize the fold, and make repeated opening and closing feel more reliable over time.
That focus is important for a tri-fold design, where mechanical stress is naturally more complex than on a standard foldable. A stronger hinge can make the difference between a striking concept and a device that feels dependable in regular use.
The Mate XT 2 is also rumored to support a stylus. If confirmed, that would expand the phone’s appeal for note-taking, document annotation, and drawing on the larger display surface.
What the original model suggests
The Mate XT Ultimate Design ran HarmonyOS 4.2 and used a tri-fold LTPO OLED display that expanded to 10.2 inches. It also supported 5G, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2.
Those specifications show where Huawei is coming from, and the rumored successor appears to be built around the same idea: make tri-fold hardware more usable, more durable, and better suited for both productivity and entertainment.
