Xiaomi has added a smaller tablet option to its lineup with the quiet launch of the Redmi Pad 2 9.7 in several Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia and Singapore. The new model stands out because it combines a 120Hz display, a Snapdragon chipset, and a starting price in the Rp3 jutaan range.
The more compact format makes the tablet easier to carry than the regular 11-inch version. That positioning suggests Xiaomi is aiming at users who want a practical device for everyday tasks without giving up a smooth display experience.
A smaller body built for mobility
The Redmi Pad 2 9.7 uses a 9.7-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,280 pixels. Xiaomi raises the refresh rate to 120Hz, up from 90Hz on the standard model, which should make scrolling and gaming feel smoother.
The screen also supports a 240Hz touch sampling rate and a peak brightness of 600 nits. That combination keeps the tablet usable indoors while still remaining readable outdoors.
Physically, the tablet measures 226.51 x 147.97 x 7.4 mm and weighs around 406 grams. Its lighter and more compact build makes it easier to slip into a bag, which should appeal to students and professionals who need a portable device for reading, entertainment, and daily work.
Snapdragon replaces MediaTek
Inside, Xiaomi swaps the MediaTek Helio G100 Ultra for the Snapdragon 6s Gen 2 4G. The change is intended to deliver stable and efficient performance for light to moderate multitasking.
The tablet comes with 4GB of RAM and two storage choices, 64GB and 128GB. That configuration is aimed at common apps and everyday media use rather than heavy productivity workloads.
Battery, cameras, and software
The battery capacity is set at 7,600 mAh, which is smaller than the 9,000 mAh unit in the regular version. Even so, Xiaomi says it should still be enough for a full day of browsing, streaming, and online meetings.
Charging support goes up to 18W, although the charger in the box is limited to 15W. On the imaging side, the tablet includes an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, with the front sensor suited to video calls and casual selfies.
The Redmi Pad 2 9.7 runs HyperOS 3 and also includes stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band WiFi, and AI face unlock. These additions keep it in line with basic entertainment and communication needs.
Price and availability
Xiaomi offers the tablet in WiFi only and WiFi + 4G versions. The 4G model gives users more flexibility when they do not want to rely on WiFi access.
In Singapore, the WiFi only variant starts at S$229, while the WiFi + 4G version starts at S$269. The tablet is available in Silver and Graphite Gray, while official pricing for Malaysia has not been announced and availability for Indonesia remains unconfirmed.
