Samsung may be preparing one of the biggest camera changes yet for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The most striking part of the rumor is the possible removal of the long-running 3x telephoto lens, a feature that has been a familiar part of the Ultra formula for several generations.
That shift would not just change one module. It could alter how Samsung defines zoom on its top-tier phone, especially if the company moves toward a more compact rear camera layout.
A familiar Ultra feature may disappear
The leak comes from Ice Universe, who shared the claim on Weibo and X. According to the tipster, Samsung plans to remove the 10 MP 3x optical telephoto camera that has been used from the Galaxy S21 Ultra through the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Ice Universe even described the chance of that change as “100%,” although that level of certainty has not been verified. If accurate, it would mark the end of one of the most consistent camera choices in the Ultra line.
Samsung has used a dedicated 3x zoom lens to cover midrange zoom for years. Removing it would suggest a different approach for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, with zoom duties redistributed across the camera system.
The main camera may take on a bigger role
One of the more notable details is that the 200 MP main camera is still said to remain. The difference is that Samsung may use a different sensor and allow it to handle 3x zoom as well.
That would mean the main camera is no longer just for standard shots. It would also step in as the replacement for the traditional telephoto 3x function, according to the leak.
Ice Universe says Samsung believes the 200 MP main camera can cover that role. If that plan is implemented, the zoom setup on the Galaxy S27 Ultra would look very different from the one used on previous Ultra models.
A more compact rear setup is also being teased
The rumored removal of the 3x lens also lines up with talk of a simpler rear camera arrangement. Ice Universe’s render points to a three-camera layout rather than the four-camera setup used by earlier generations.
That does not yet confirm the final hardware count. It is still unclear whether Samsung will replace the 3x module with another lens or simply eliminate one sensor from the previous structure.
Even so, the direction appears clear enough: Samsung may be aiming for a cleaner and more streamlined camera design on the S27 Ultra.
The module itself may look different too
The changes may not stop at the number of lenses. Ice Universe previously said the rear camera module on the Galaxy S27 Ultra will also be redesigned.
The new shape is said to run horizontally and resemble the style used by Google Pixel devices. That would give the phone a very different visual identity from its predecessors, not just a revised camera specification sheet.
In other words, Samsung appears to be working on both the hardware layout and the external design at the same time.
More camera upgrades are still part of the plan
The rumors do not end with the main and telephoto cameras. Ice Universe also says the Galaxy S27 Ultra will receive a new ultrawide camera.
That ultrawide sensor is said to debut first on the Galaxy Z Fold8 before appearing on the Ultra model. A new front camera is also mentioned for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
Separately, Ice Universe said a variable feature on the device is already 80% confirmed, although the details of that function have not been explained. For now, all of these claims remain early leaks, so the final hardware package could still change.
The Galaxy S27 series is still several months away from launch, which means the camera setup has time to evolve before Samsung makes anything official. Even so, the idea of losing the 3x telephoto lens already signals a major shift in the Ultra camera strategy.
