Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is already drawing attention for one major reason: its camera setup may change more radically than its design. Early leaks suggest Samsung is considering removing the 3x telephoto lens entirely and shifting more of the short-range zoom workload to a newer 200 MP main sensor.
That possibility stands out because the 3x telephoto has long been one of the defining parts of the Ultra lineup. Since the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the 10 MP 3x telephoto has been a familiar element in Samsung’s flagship camera formula, but the Galaxy S27 Ultra may break that pattern.
A smaller rear camera count
Another rumor points to a revised rear camera module with a horizontal, elongated shape. The render circulating online also shows only three rear cameras, which would mean one fewer lens than previous models.
That change has led to speculation that Samsung is simplifying the camera system rather than only refreshing its appearance. It is still unclear whether the space usually occupied by the 3x telephoto would remain unused or be filled by another sensor.
Main sensor takes on a bigger role
The most notable part of the leak is Samsung’s apparent confidence in its 200 MP main camera. Instead of relying on a dedicated 3x telephoto as heavily as before, the company is said to want the main sensor to handle more close-range zoom tasks.
If that direction holds, the Ultra series would shift in character. The 3x telephoto has traditionally helped give the phone flexibility at medium distances, so reducing its role would mark a significant change in how Samsung approaches rear camera performance.
Still early, with room for change
The information comes from Ice Universe on Weibo and X, and it has since been tied to Samsung’s reported camera overhaul plans. The Galaxy S27 Ultra has not been shown publicly, and its final specifications remain subject to change.
That timing matters because the device is still expected to be about seven months away from launch. With that much time left, Samsung still has room to adjust its strategy before the phone reaches the market.
Broader camera changes may be coming
The Galaxy S27 Ultra rumor also fits into a wider picture of Samsung’s camera work. The company is said to be preparing a new ultrawide camera that will debut first on the Galaxy Z Fold8, along with a newer front camera version for that device.
There is also talk of a variable feature whose chance of appearing is said to be 80 percent, although details on how it would be implemented have not been clarified. Taken together, these leaks suggest Samsung may be preparing a different camera direction across future Galaxy devices, with the Ultra series moving closer to a setup that leans more on the main sensor than on the number of rear lenses.
