Huawei is reportedly lining up a compact tablet that aims far beyond the usual small-screen formula. The MatePad Mini 2 is being positioned as a premium device with flagship-style ambitions, and the biggest clue comes from its expected performance hardware.
The tablet is said to use a newer Kirin chipset from Huawei’s 9-series line, with some analysts pointing to the Kirin 9030 or Kirin 9030S. That would place it in serious company, especially since the same chip names are also being linked to Huawei’s Mate 80 flagship phone series.
A Small Tablet With a Bigger Performance Target
That chip choice would mark a clear step up from the first MatePad Mini. The earlier model used the Kirin 9020, which launched in September 2025 and was not considered Huawei’s most advanced option at the time.
Against that backdrop, the MatePad Mini 2 looks like more than a simple refresh. It appears to be Huawei’s attempt to give a compact tablet the kind of processing headroom usually reserved for more premium devices.
Display Changes Focus on a Cleaner Premium Look
Huawei is also expected to keep the 8.8-inch screen size, but the panel itself should feel more refined. The MatePad Mini 2 is said to switch to an OLED display with much thinner, more symmetrical bezels on all four sides.
That design shift would make the tablet look more modern without changing its compact footprint. The first MatePad Mini already featured a 1600 x 2560 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, so any improvement on the new model would likely be felt most in media playback and gaming.
Battery and Connectivity Could Be Major Selling Points
Power management is another area where the new tablet may move up a level. A prototype under testing is reported to carry a larger battery than the first generation, which already packed a 6,400 mAh cell with 66W fast charging.
Some reports even mention a 7,000 mAh battery being tested for the compact device. If that figure holds, the MatePad Mini 2 could stand out as a small tablet built for longer use without sacrificing portability.
Connectivity may also help define its appeal. NFC is said to be on board, which would be unusual for a tablet of this size, and 5G support is also expected to be included.
The First Generation Sets the Baseline
The original MatePad Mini gives a clearer sense of where Huawei wants the line to go. It arrived with dual rear cameras rated at 50 MP and 8 MP, a 32 MP front camera, up to 16 GB of RAM, and storage options reaching 1 TB.
It also shipped with HarmonyOS 5.1 and a very lightweight body. Huawei listed the device at around 255 grams with a thickness of just 5.1 mm, making it comfortable to hold with one hand for extended periods.
Seen together, those details suggest the MatePad Mini 2 is being shaped as a more serious successor rather than a routine update. If the leaked information proves accurate, Huawei could end up with a compact tablet that combines performance, battery life, and premium features in one unusually ambitious package.
