Sony’s next flagship is making a clear statement: the Xperia 1 VIII is being shaped less as a routine upgrade and more as a device built around imaging intelligence and a refreshed identity. Rather than blending in with other premium phones, it leans on AI-assisted photography and a new design language to stand out.
That shift is backed by hardware Sony has deliberately kept distinctive. The Xperia 1 VIII still retains the physical shutter button, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a microSD slot, even as the outside gains a new ORE design language inspired by the texture of natural materials and raw gemstones.
AI takes the lead in the camera system
Sony is placing the AI Camera Assistant at the center of the Xperia 1 VIII experience. The feature uses Xperia Intelligence to analyze subjects and shooting conditions, then suggests settings such as color tone, lens choice, and bokeh effects.
The system is also tied to Creative Look, which draws from Sony’s Alpha camera imaging approach. In practice, that means the phone is designed to simplify photography while still leaving room for creative control.
A stronger telephoto setup
One of the biggest hardware changes sits in the telephoto camera. Sony says the telephoto sensor is 1/1.56 inch and about four times larger than the previous generation, with the goal of improving detail when shooting distant subjects and in challenging light.
The rear camera system itself consists of three 48 MP cameras. Sony pairs an ultra-wide 16 mm camera, a 24 mm main camera, and a 70 mm telephoto camera, all of which support RAW multi-frame processing to expand dynamic range and reduce noise.
The main camera uses a 48 MP Exmor T sensor sized at 1/1.35 inch with an f/1.9 aperture and Hybrid OIS/EIS. The 48 MP ultra-wide camera has an f/2.0 aperture and a 104-degree field of view, while the 48 MP telephoto camera uses an f/2.8 aperture at 70 mm.
Zoom flexibility is also part of the package. Sony lists 3x optical zoom and up to 17.5x hybrid zoom, giving the Xperia 1 VIII a more versatile telephoto range than a standard flagship setup.
Display, audio, and durability remain core strengths
The Xperia 1 VIII uses a 6.5-inch OLED display with FHD+ 1080 x 2340 resolution. It supports an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling, HDR, Creator Mode, and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage.
Sony is also pushing audio as a major part of the experience. The phone includes Advanced Full-Stage Stereo Speakers with identical left and right speaker units, along with Dolby Atmos, 360 Reality Audio, and DSEE Ultimate.
The body measures 162 x 74 x 8.3 mm and weighs 200 grams. Protection includes Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the display and IP65/IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.
Flagship performance and long battery life
Under the hood, Sony equips the Xperia 1 VIII with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The 3 nm chipset is claimed to deliver up to 20% better performance than the previous generation.
Memory and storage options are equally high-end, with up to 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.1 storage. Sony also keeps the microSD slot, which supports up to 2 TB, giving the phone unusually generous storage expansion for a flagship.
Battery capacity stands at 5,000 mAh, and Sony claims up to two days of use under normal conditions. There is also Processing Optimization for better efficiency during demanding tasks such as navigation.
Charging support includes 30W fast charging, wireless charging, and Battery Share. Sony also says the battery health can last up to four years, a claim that adds long-term appeal in the premium segment.
Software support and connectivity
The Xperia 1 VIII runs Android 14 out of the box. Sony promises four years of OS updates and six years of security updates.
Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, USB 3.2, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The phone arrives in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
Pricing and availability
Pre-orders for the Xperia 1 VIII open on 13 May 2026. In Europe, the standard 256 GB model is priced at around 1,499 euro, while the exclusive 1 TB Native Gold version costs 1,999 euro.
During the initial pre-order period, buyers of the standard model will receive a Sony WH-1000XM6 headphone bundle. Sony is also offering an optional translucent case with a built-in stand that it says is resistant to yellowing.
