Millions of New York Homeowners Could See STAR Relief, Here’s How to Check Yours

Millions of New York homeowners are set to get property tax relief through the state’s STAR program, with some receiving a check in the mail and others seeing the benefit as a tax credit. Gov. Kathy Hochul said the program will deliver $2 billion in relief for families and seniors.

The School Tax Relief program, known as STAR, is expected to help 2.78 million homeowners share $2.1 billion in tax relief. That includes 474,000 homeowners in New York City and 572,000 on Long Island.

What STAR can mean for homeowners

Hochul said many eligible homeowners will receive between $350 and $600, while seniors on fixed income could see a larger benefit of $700 to $1,500. State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said the STAR Credit Direct Deposit Program can help eligible homeowners receive the benefit quickly and securely.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said the relief matters as New Yorkers face high gas prices and rising costs. He said the STAR program will put money back into families’ pockets.

How eligibility works

Eligibility depends on home ownership, primary residency, age and income. Married couples can receive only one STAR benefit, unless they are separated.

How to check your payment or credit

According to Hochul, most recipients will see the benefit in their tax bill, while others will receive checks in the mail. STAR recipients can track delivery or sign up for direct deposit to receive the benefit.

State officials are also hosting a series of seminars about the STAR program throughout New York state this July, giving homeowners another way to learn how the program works and where to check their status.
