Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has been arrested on four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery, turning an already tense offseason story into a far more serious legal case. The charges carry a possible sentence of up to life in prison.
Arnold surrendered to a warrant at the Orient Road jail in Tampa and remained in custody Wednesday night, according to a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office. His representation has denied the allegations, saying there is no credible evidence linking him to the case.
What prosecutors say happened
The state attorney’s office said in a release that Arnold orchestrated the kidnapping and robbery just hours after reporting missing property to the Largo Police Department. Prosecutors also said they intend to seek a pretrial motion to keep him jailed until trial because he “remains a danger to the community.”
The case centers on a February incident involving stolen cash and goods from an Airbnb rental. According to records obtained by www.freep.com from the Largo Police Department, Arnold discovered watches, jewelry, designer bags and shoes, a cell phone and about $100,000 in cash were missing when he was leaving the rental on Feb. 1.
He reported the theft on Feb. 3, and police say two defendants later lured his personal driver and two associates to an apartment shortly after midnight on Feb. 4, where the men were pistol-whipped, held at gunpoint and questioned about the missing property.
Other defendants and plea deals
Boakai Hilton, whom Arnold described as “my childhood best friend” in a police video obtained by the Free Press in April, is accused of organizing the robbery and beating. Hilton is charged with multiple felony counts, while three other defendants — Lyndell Hudson, Christion Williams and Freddie Hughes — also face life sentences on similar charges.
Two defendants, Arianna Del Valle and Jasmine Randazzo, agreed to plea deals in court Wednesday. Randazzo was sentenced to four years in Florida State prison, followed by six years of probation, and agreed to testify truthfully for the state in future proceedings tied to the case.
Del Valle entered an open plea and also agreed to testify truthfully for the state, but her sentence will come later after other proceedings are finished. Hilton, Hudson, Williams and Hughes are being held without bond in a Florida jail awaiting trials scheduled for later this year.
How the Lions are responding
The Lions said in a statement that they are aware of the legal situation and will not comment further out of respect for the ongoing process. The team had continued to stand behind Arnold this spring while the case hovered over his status with the club.
Coach Dan Campbell said in March that “it seems like he wasn’t involved with this,” and added later that he planned to trust what the player said. Arnold had been practicing sparingly after December shoulder surgery and was working to earn back his starting job once healthy.
Before the legal case escalated, Arnold had declined to discuss it in detail and said that, in situations like this, silence can be the best answer. That posture now comes amid a criminal case that could have major consequences both in court and for his place on the Lions roster.
