Willy Adames’ Grand Slam Fuels the Giants’ Fresh Start Against Mariners

Willy Adames delivered the decisive blow with a seventh-inning grand slam as the San Francisco Giants opened the second half with a powerful win over the Seattle Mariners. The blast capped an offensive surge that gave the club a third straight victory after a difficult first half.

The Giants entered the game at 42-55, but their performance in Seattle offered the reset manager Tony Vitello wanted coming out of the All-Star break. San Francisco will try to stretch its winning streak to a season-high four games behind Logan Webb on Saturday.

Adames Breaks the Game Open

San Francisco had built a 3-0 lead before Adames came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh. Casey Schmitt and Heliot Ramos singled, while Jung Hoo Lee was hit by a pitch to set up the key at-bat.

Adames drove a hanging slider from Seattle reliever Nick Davila over the right-center-field fence for his 16th homer of the year. The grand slam was the Giants’ MLB-leading eighth of the season and moved them within one of the franchise’s single-season record of nine, set in 2015.

The shortstop posted a .230 average and .701 OPS across 91 games in the first half, but his power could reshape San Francisco’s outlook if it continues after the break. Vitello called Adames one of the team’s main leaders and stressed the importance of carrying Friday’s energy forward.

“The challenge is on for the coaching staff, too, but for the players to bring the attitude they brought today for a 66-game season and make it a fresh start,” Vitello said.

Roupp Sets the Tone on the Mound

Landen Roupp gave the Giants the pitching performance needed to make the late offensive outburst stand up. The right-hander allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings in his first start since July 6.

Roupp has allowed only one run in 15 innings across his past two outings, lowering his ERA to 3.98 through 19 starts this season. His work kept Seattle scoreless long enough for San Francisco’s lineup to find its breakthrough.

Giants contributor Key performance Season context
Bryce Eldridge Two-run homer in the fifth inning Nine home runs in 55 games
Willy Adames Grand slam in the seventh inning 16 home runs
Landen Roupp Seven scoreless innings, two hits allowed 3.98 ERA in 19 starts
Jason Foley Scoreless 1-2-3 eighth inning First MLB appearance since Sept. 27, 2024

Eldridge Starts the Rally

Bryce Eldridge broke the scoreless tie with a two-run drive to right-center field off Mariners starter Bryce Miller in the fifth. The 21-year-old had popped out with runners on the corners against Miller in the third before capitalizing on another splitter two innings later.

“When I don’t come through with guys in scoring position, that probably makes me more mad than anything,” Eldridge said. “Thankfully, I got that next pitch and got to hit it out.”

The Giants added another run in the sixth after an error by Seattle second baseman Cole Young. That sequence set the stage for Adames to turn a close game into a convincing victory in the next inning.

Foley Adds a New Bullpen Option

Jason Foley also made his Giants debut, entering in the eighth inning after Roupp’s exit and retiring all three batters he faced. According to www.mlb.com, the former Tigers closer was activated from the 60-day injured list last week after missing a year and a half while recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Foley reached 97.4 mph and struck out Colt Emerson to finish the inning in his first Major League appearance since Sept. 27, 2024. “The big league adrenaline will get to you a little bit, so I’m happy it was coming out pretty well,” Foley said.

For a bullpen short on late-inning experience, Foley’s clean debut offered another encouraging sign alongside the Giants’ renewed offense and Roupp’s sharp start. The club now has an early opportunity to turn its post-break reset into sustained momentum.
