The only Reform UK member in the Welsh parliament, Laura Anne Jones, has been suspended for two weeks without pay over a racist slur posted in an office WhatsApp group. The Senedd voted to suspend Jones after an investigation by the standards commissioner found she used an offensive Chinese racial slur during a discussion about TikTok and Chinese espionage concerns.
Jones defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK during the summer. Her suspension deals a significant blow to Reform’s ambitions for next year’s Senedd elections in Wales. The party’s hopes were already dented by their failure in the Caerphilly by-election, where Plaid Cymru secured a strong victory amid local rejection of Reform’s anti-immigration stance.
The standards of conduct committee outlined that Jones’s conduct fell “far below the standards expected.” The investigation revealed that the slur was posted in August in a group discussing the threat posed by the Chinese government via TikTok. The report also highlighted a November exchange where a staff member in Jones’s office posted an inflammatory message about policing and race, which Jones acknowledged but did not reprimand.
According to the report, “The conduct found here points to an office culture where there was little respect towards others or any consideration of what may be found offensive.” Jones was cleared of any wrongdoing related to expenses. Before her suspension, she apologized in the Senedd and expressed regret for the offense caused by her language.
Jones also spoke about the personal toll the investigation had taken, revealing that leaks and the process had severely impacted her mental health. She said she had come close to taking her own life. Reform UK Wales issued a statement affirming that Jones had apologized for the private comments.
Political responses have been sharply critical. Plaid Cymru described Jones’s remarks as “vile and completely unacceptable,” adding that Reform UK’s acceptance of her defection exposed the party’s divisive rhetoric. Welsh Labour linked Jones’s comments to a broader Reform UK playbook characterized by anti-immigration and polarizing language.
This suspension follows wider scrutiny of Reform UK members’ conduct, including other recent suspensions affecting the party’s image. Reform UK now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and credibility in Wales ahead of the upcoming elections. The episode raises concerns about the party’s internal culture and its appeal to Welsh voters who traditionally value community cohesion and respect for diversity.
