Tatiana Schlossberg, granddaughter of former US President John F. Kennedy, has revealed an aggressive cancer diagnosis. The 35-year-old shared she has less than a year to live after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Schlossberg announced her illness in an essay published in The New Yorker on the anniversary of her grandfather’s assassination. She detailed her diagnosis came shortly after giving birth in May.
A mother of two, Schlossberg described her once-active lifestyle filled with running, skiing, and swimming in New York’s Hudson River. Surprisingly, she once swam in the river to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Despite undergoing chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, her doctors have given a grim prognosis. She recounted her doctor telling her he might keep her alive for up to a year during a clinical trial.
Her essay expresses deep concern about her children, born in 2022 and 2024, potentially not remembering her. Schlossberg also opened up about the emotional toll her diagnosis takes on her mother, former US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.
She reflected on her desire to always be a good daughter and sister. Now, she feels her illness adds another hardship to her family’s legacy of public service and tragedy.
Schlossberg also criticized her second cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom she watched become US health secretary despite lacking experience in medicine or government. She described feeling uneasy about the healthcare system under his leadership while battling her own illness.
Her brother, Jack Schlossberg, recently announced a congressional run in New York. He shared her essay with the message, “Life is short—let it rip,” underscoring the family’s ongoing involvement in American politics.
