Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC: Route, Street Closures, Balloons, Floats & Performances

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place in New York City on November 27, starting at 8:30 a.m. Eastern and proceeding rain or shine. The parade route begins on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and culminates at Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street, where final performances will entertain spectators.

This year’s parade features an impressive lineup with 34 giant balloons and 4 mini-balloons filling the sky. Notable new balloons include characters such as Buzz Lightyear, Pac-Man, and Mario from Super Mario Brothers, alongside a large onion carriage with Shrek guests and figures from “KPop Demon Hunters.”

Alongside the balloons, there will be 28 vibrant floats, including seven newly debuted ones. These include “The Land of Glaciers” by Holland America Line and “Upside Down Invasion: Stranger Things” by Netflix. The floats are expertly crafted by Macy’s Parade Studio artisans, combining design, engineering, animation, and more.

The parade will showcase a diverse range of performers and entertainment. Stars like Ciara, Busta Rhymes, and Audrey Nuna will perform, while Broadway casts from productions such as “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Ragtime” also take part. Marching bands hail from multiple U.S. states and Panama, plus local groups like the New York Police Department marching band.

Several streets will be closed or restricted to accommodate the event. Central Park West from West 72nd to West 86th Street will close midnight before the event until noon on parade day. Other closures include West 72nd Street through West 8th Street from Central Park West to Columbus Avenue. Mass transit is strongly recommended due to heavy traffic and spectator security measures imposed by NYPD.

The weather forecast predicts a chilly day with blustery winds, with temperatures feeling in the 30s Fahrenheit. New York City regulations prevent flying full-size balloons if wind speeds surpass certain thresholds, ensuring safety throughout the event.

Spectators are advised that large backpacks, lawn chairs, umbrellas, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited within the viewing areas. These guidelines aim to deliver a smooth and enjoyable parade experience for all attendees.
