Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph, who play mother and daughter on the Paramount+ series Landman, expressed surprise when their characters faced arrest in a recent episode. The scene unfolded after their characters, Angela and Ainsley, held a lively cocktail party for nursing home residents, which coincided with a visit from health inspectors.
Randolph recalled her shock, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I was reading that like, ‘I’m sorry, I get handcuffed?!’ It was hysterical." The unexpected law enforcement intervention came as Angela and Ainsley were busted for serving alcohol to elderly residents. When one inspector tried to make Angela sit down, she fiercely reacted by slamming her knee into his groin and hitting him. Meanwhile, Ainsley tripped the other inspector, causing both to fall.
The incident marked a surprising moment for Ainsley’s typically composed character, according to Randolph. She described it as "very out of character for her" but justified it as “anything for her mother.” Eventually, both women were handcuffed and had to call Tommy (played by Billy Bob Thornton) to secure their release.
Larter commented on the situation with empathy for her character, emphasizing the importance of dignity for the elderly. She said, “It’s so sad when you think about how many people that are in this prime of their life, and they’re not being treated like that. They’re being treated like infantiles.” She continued, "They should be able to have a cocktail if they want to have a cocktail, and if they want to have a little dirty dancing, go for it! Enjoy your golden years!"
The show draws inspiration from real-life stories through Taylor Sheridan’s wife, Nicole Muirbrook, who volunteers at a nursing home similar to the series’ setting. Randolph shared that Muirbrook’s experiences helped shape the storyline, noting that actual residents attend filming and enjoy the scenes, adding authenticity and heart to the show.
Series co-creator Christian Wallace assured fans that Angela and Ainsley’s spirited nature guarantees they won’t be kept away easily. He remarked, "I think it would take more than some handcuffs to keep Angela away from anything she wants to do.” Randolph agreed, adding, "And even if they did, they would find their way back."
Landman is currently streaming on Paramount+.
