Why Joe Keery Chose to Dress as Stranger Things Character at His Wedding Ceremony

Joe Keery, known for his role as Steve Harrington in Stranger Things, recently wore his character’s Scoops Ahoy costume at a friend’s wedding. The photo of him officiating the ceremony in the outfit quickly went viral, sparking curiosity about the story behind it.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Keery revealed that the wedding was a costume-themed event. He explained that his friends Matt and Veronica, the couple getting married, invited him to attend in costume since the wedding took place around Halloween. Veronica specifically suggested that Keery come dressed as Steve Harrington, which he happily did.

Keery shared that Amy Parris, the costume designer for Stranger Things, lent him the authentic Scoops Ahoy uniform for the occasion. However, he emphasized he wasn’t the only guest in costume. “There’s a bunch of people in costumes,” Keery noted, highlighting that attendees included characters like the Riddler and Shrek, making it a fully themed celebration.

When asked about the iconic costume, Keery recalled how he considered changing parts of the outfit during filming season three. “I thought, we’re in action, fighting Russians, in an underground lair… shouldn’t I take off the blouse part? Maybe lose the handkerchief?” he said. The Duffer Brothers, creators of the show, insisted he keep the look intact, calling it “a look.”

Keery also mentioned that the costume felt tighter this time around compared to when he originally wore it during filming. He humorously admitted that the shorts didn’t fit quite the same, acknowledging the passage of time since he last wore the outfit professionally.

His character, Steve Harrington, who works in the mall’s ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy in season three, remains a fan favorite. Keery continues to portray Steve in Stranger Things season four, which released its first four episodes in May. The remaining episodes will premiere in two segments, one on Christmas Day and the final one on New Year’s Day.
