Calgary Food Hall Shut Down by AHS Over Pest Activity Concerns

Calgary Food Hall Closed by Alberta Health Services Due to Pest Activity

A popular Calgary food hall has been ordered to close by Alberta Health Services (AHS) following the discovery of pest activity. First Street Market, located at 1327 First St. S.W. in Victoria Park, ceased operations effective November 28, according to the AHS closure order.

The closure applies to all vendors within the food hall. A spokesperson for First Street Market confirmed the decision after an investigation uncovered pest presence in the facility. The exact nature of the pests was not specified.

The closure remains in effect until AHS confirms that the market meets health and safety standards. "Commercial grade sanitation is being completed across all surfaces, food storage areas, and preparation facilities," the market’s statement said. They also noted ongoing treatment and follow-up inspections.

Management emphasized caution due to the shared food environment. Chris Gale, general manager at Actually Pretty Good—a pizza vendor inside the market—highlighted that "in a multi-vendor food market, health concerns at one vendor’s operation can quickly impact others, so vigilance is essential."

First Street Market opened in 2021 and quickly became a favored venue for diverse culinary options in Calgary. The temporary closure affects numerous vendors, all of whom are cooperating with AHS to address the issue.

AHS enforces strict public health regulations to ensure that food establishments maintain cleanliness to protect consumer safety. This closure reflects the agency’s commitment to preventing health risks associated with pest infestations.

Key Actions Taken by First Street Market

  1. Comprehensive commercial-grade sanitation of all surfaces
  2. Treatment of affected areas to eliminate pests
  3. Follow-up inspections scheduled with AHS
  4. Commitment to reopening only after AHS clearance

The market’s management reassured patrons they are prioritizing safety and will announce reopening once authorized. Meanwhile, affected vendors await updates as remediation efforts continue under AHS supervision.
