Michael Slater Removed from Cricket NSW Hall of Fame, Life Membership Revoked Over Domestic Violence Offences

Michael Slater Removed from Cricket NSW Hall of Fame

Former Australian cricket player Michael Slater has been removed from the Cricket NSW Hall of Fame. His life membership was also revoked following serious domestic violence offences.

Slater pleaded guilty to seven charges related to domestic violence offenses involving a woman in the Noosa region. These incidents occurred between December and March and include two counts of choking, stalking, assault, and burglary. He received a suspended four-year prison sentence.

He represented Australia in 74 Test matches and 42 One Day Internationals between 1993 and 2001. Despite his sporting achievements, his off-field conduct has marred his legacy. Slater was previously convicted of domestic violence offences in 2022.

Since 2016, five women in New South Wales have taken out protection orders against him. The state cricket body initiated a review of his status earlier this year. This process culminated in a vote during a recent Cricket NSW ordinary general meeting.

According to Nine papers, members and delegates voted to remove Slater from the Hall of Fame. Slater had submitted a written appeal to retain his life membership, but it was ultimately rejected. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 and granted life membership the following year.

After retiring from professional cricket, Slater moved into broadcasting. He worked with Seven Network but did not have his contract renewed in 2021. His ongoing legal troubles have raised important discussions about accountability in sports.
