Strong Winds, Rain and Snow Impact the GTA on Sunday

Strong winds and rain have swept through Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) ahead of a significant temperature drop on Sunday. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement that highlighted gusts reaching up to 70 km/h across the region.

Temperatures in Toronto are expected to peak at 4°C and drop as low as –6°C by night, with wind chill making it feel closer to –12°C. The City of Toronto has responded by keeping its five warming centres open to provide relief for vulnerable residents.

Warming Centre Locations

  1. 136 Spadina Rd.
  2. 81 Elizabeth St.
  3. 12 Holmes Ave.
  4. 885 Scarborough Golf Club Rd.
  5. 349 George St.

Daytime drop-in programs are also available to assist individuals affected by the cold weather.

Meanwhile, the rest of southern Ontario continues to face wintry conditions. Snowfall warnings remain in effect for Peel, Halton, and all of Durham Region. Additional snow accumulation between 2 and 4 cm is expected, with up to 5 cm in elevated areas north of Lake Ontario, including the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Environment Canada warns that travel conditions will likely be difficult, with reduced visibility at times due to the snow. Recent snowfall has been significant, with nearly 60 cm recorded off Lake Huron last week alone. Areas west of Kitchener have reported approximately 30 cm of snow during this period.

Residents in the GTA are advised to prepare for challenging weather on Sunday, including strong winds, rain, and snow. The changing weather highlights the necessity for caution on the roads and utilization of city resources such as warming centres during the cold snap.
