Blizzard Expected to Impact Most of the Island Midweek, Authorities Issue Warnings

Blizzard Set to Impact Most of the Island on Wednesday

A strong blizzard is forecast to hit most of the island this Wednesday, bringing heavy snow and high winds. Special weather statements have been issued for nearly all regions, excluding the Northern Peninsula.

The storm will begin early Wednesday morning in the southwestern parts and will gradually move across the island throughout the day and into the evening. Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil projects snowfall accumulations between 15 and 30 centimeters, with some areas potentially receiving even more.

Neil emphasized that the exact snowfall amounts depend on the storm’s track, which will become clearer as the event approaches. Winds are expected to gust up to 100 kilometers per hour, causing hazardous travel conditions and significantly reduced visibility.

The southern Avalon and the Burin Peninsula are likely to experience varied precipitation. These areas may start with snow or ice pellets in the morning, shift to rain during the day, and then revert back to snow by evening. Motorists and residents should prepare for slippery surfaces and rapidly changing weather.

Key details of the blizzard include:

  1. Snowfall: 15–30 cm or higher in localized spots
  2. Wind gusts: Up to 100 km/h, leading to blowing snow
  3. Timing: Starting early Wednesday in the southwest, spreading island-wide by evening
  4. Precipitation mix: Snow, ice pellets, rain, and back to snow in some southern locations

With this powerful storm approaching, authorities urge residents to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions. Travel could be severely impacted during Wednesday, especially in exposed and elevated areas. Staying informed and prepared will be critical to safety as the blizzard unfolds across the island.
