YSU Women Secure Fifth Win in Dominant Victory over Akron
Youngstown State Penguins women’s basketball team achieved a decisive 90-63 victory against Akron, marking their fifth win of the regular season. The dominant performance showcased the team’s growing strength and balanced offense in NCAA Division I competition.
Sophomore Sophie Gregory, a West Branch graduate, spearheaded the offense with an impressive double-double. She posted 24 points and collected 10 rebounds, setting the tone early in the game. Gregory’s inside presence and scoring ability proved key in maintaining YSU’s commanding lead throughout.
Casey Santoro also delivered a strong showing, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. YSU’s offensive depth was evident, as four other players contributed significant scoring. Sarah Baker scored 16 points, Erica King added 14, and Hayden Barrier contributed 12 points to the topside effort.
Five Penguins players reached double-digit point totals, underlining the team’s balanced scoring attack. This collective effort disrupted Akron’s defensive schemes and limited their opportunities to keep the game close.
Akron struggled to keep pace, with Maddie Vejsicky leading the Zips’ effort by scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds. However, the team was unable to overcome YSU’s aggressive play and efficient shooting night.
Youngstown State will now prepare to enter Horizon League Conference play with momentum. Their current non-conference record stands at 5-2, indicating promising progress under their season’s development.
The Penguins are set to face Milwaukee on the road, with the game scheduled for Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m. This matchup will offer a critical early test within the league as YSU aims to build on their recent successes.
