Finishing Has Been the Difference for Texans in One-Score Games
The Houston Texans’ season turnaround has hinged on their ability to finish close games. After starting 0-3 with narrow losses totaling just 13 points, Houston has won four straight one-possession games since Week 9. The team’s improved clutch performance has been critical to their current 7-5 record, putting them within striking distance of the AFC South leaders.
The Texans’ defense has been pivotal in this late-season surge. Since Week 3, Houston’s defense has allowed the fewest points per game in fourth quarters (2.7), while ranking highly in sacks (13) and interceptions (6). Defensive stars Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter have made key plays, contributing multiple sacks and forcing turnovers that sealed victories.
“We get on the field, it’s time to close out the game,” said Anderson Jr. after a win over the Colts. “We pride ourselves on that. When we go on the field, something great is going to happen because we caused it.” Coach DeMeco Ryans praised the team’s resolve. “No one play is going to get us in a tank… We’re playing full 60-minute games now, and that’s the difference.”
Backup quarterback Davis Mills has also been crucial during starter C.J. Stroud’s concussion absence. Mills orchestrated two game-winning drives in three starts, including overcoming a 19-point deficit to beat the Jaguars and clinching a win versus the Titans. He scored six total touchdowns and helped the offense average 22 points per game during that stretch.
Defensive safety Calen Bullock forced three turnovers in a key Week 12 win over the Bills, including the game-sealing interception. Bullock credits discipline and teamwork for the Texans’ ability to finish consistently. “Everybody is just finishing—from special teams, offense to defense,” he said.
The Texans now trail the Colts and Jaguars by only one game in the AFC South. Their ability to execute in clutch moments has transformed close losses into wins and kept their playoff hopes alive. Sunday’s upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs will further test Houston’s resilience and finishing prowess.
