Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris emphasized that ace pitcher Tarik Skubal is not “untouchable” when it comes to trade offers, despite Skubal’s impressive back-to-back Cy Young Awards. Speaking at the winter meetings in Orlando, Harris outlined a philosophy that no player is beyond consideration as the team seeks opportunities to improve.
Harris stated, “I don’t believe in untouchable players at any level.” He explained that this approach is part of a broader effort to build a winning organization. Harris noted that listening to all offers—regardless of their likelihood—is necessary to strengthen the team’s future.
Skubal has one year remaining before free agency, and his agent Scott Boras is known for infrequent contract extensions near that stage. This situation could lead the Tigers to explore trade possibilities, though Harris was careful not to speculate on any specific moves.
“I can’t, and I won’t, speculate on trades for our own players,” Harris said, emphasizing fairness to players and other teams. He also highlighted the collective effort required to reach the postseason, recognizing the contributions of the entire roster.
Skubal finished the recent season with a 13-6 record, 2.21 ERA, and 241 strikeouts across 195⅓ innings. He led qualifying American League pitchers in several key metrics, including WAR, strikeout rate, and lowest opponent on-base plus slugging percentage (.559).
Over the past two seasons, Skubal has been one of MLB’s premier pitchers. He ranks first in strikeouts (469) and WHIP (0.91), and second in ERA (2.30), innings pitched (387⅓), and opponent OPS (.558). He also set a major league record since 2014 by starting 12 games of at least six scoreless innings.
Harris underscored Skubal’s importance: “Tarik’s a Tiger right now. We’re thrilled he’s a Tiger. He’s a huge part of what we’re doing right now.” While open to opportunities, the Tigers view Skubal as a central figure in their competitive plans.
The Tigers have created a competitive roster through this openness to change, displaying a bright present and promising future. Harris credits the team’s flexible mindset as a key factor in their recent success and continued growth.
