The New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team is set to face VCU on Wednesday night in a pivotal non-conference road game. The matchup will take place at the Siegel Center in Richmond, with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
New Mexico holds a 7-2 record and is riding a four-game winning streak. Their latest victory was a commanding 98-71 win over Santa Clara at home. Notably, the Lobos boast three freshmen scoring in double figures, led by Tomislav Buljan, the reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week. Buljan posted 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Broncos, marking his fourth double-double of the season.
VCU enters the game with a 6-3 record and currently sits at No. 51 in the NET rankings. The Rams remain undefeated at home with a 4-0 record this season. Their season highlights include securing third place at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas last month.
The two programs have split their previous meetings, with New Mexico winning last year’s matchup 78-71 at The Pit. Donovan Dent led the Lobos with a career-high 40 points in that game. VCU claimed victory in their first contest during the 2008-09 Cancun Challenge. This will be the first game between these teams in Richmond.
Although the Lobos have never played at the Siegel Center before, they are familiar with Richmond. New Mexico played NCAA tournament games in Richmond Coliseum in 1996, defeating Kansas State before losing to Georgetown. The Lobos also competed in a 1992 NIT quarterfinal against Virginia at the same venue.
Following the VCU game, New Mexico will conclude its non-conference schedule at home against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., with coverage available on Altitude, the Mountain West Network, and the Lobo Radio Network. Tickets for the FGCU game are currently on sale at GoLobos.com.
