Snow Changing to Wintry Mix and Returning to Snow Wednesday in Metro Detroit

Snow Changing to a Wintry Mix, Then Back to Snow for Metro Detroit on Wednesday

Metro Detroit will experience a dynamic winter weather pattern on Wednesday as snow transitions to a wintry mix before returning to snow later in the day. According to the latest 4Warn Weather update, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac, and St. Clair Counties until 4:00 PM, with another 2 inches of snow expected in addition to the 3 to 5 inches accumulated overnight.

An area of low pressure moving over the region is introducing just enough warm air to shift precipitation to a rain and snow mix in the southern parts of Metro Detroit during the morning commute. However, areas north of Interstate 69 will remain cold and continue to receive snow throughout the day, creating varied road conditions across the region.

Weather Conditions and Impacts

Temperatures will reach a high of 37°F in the morning but will steadily fall into the afternoon and evening. Winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour will accompany the precipitation, increasing the difficulty for drivers and potentially causing blowing and drifting snow. Officials warn of a refreeze hazard during the evening commute, especially where the wintry mix occurs, as temperatures drop below freezing.

The heavy, wet snow has already caused significant disruptions, contributing to more than 400 school closures across southeastern Michigan on Wednesday. Residents are advised to exercise caution when traveling and prepare for slippery conditions.

Forecast for Late Wednesday and Beyond

The snow is expected to taper off late Wednesday afternoon, but cloudy skies will persist overnight with temperatures plunging into the upper teens. Wind chill values could fall into single digits, making for bitterly cold conditions. Thursday will bring mostly cloudy skies and a slight chance of isolated snow showers, with highs remaining in the upper 20s.

Looking ahead, snow chances will return by Friday and continue into Saturday. The end of the week will feature colder temperatures with highs in the upper 20s, and lows dipping into the single digits by Sunday and Monday, with wind chills potentially dropping at or below zero. A brief period of sunshine is expected Sunday afternoon before clouds increase early next week, bringing a slight temperature rebound into the upper 20s and low 30s by Tuesday.

This evolving forecast calls for ongoing vigilance as Metro Detroit navigates fluctuating winter weather conditions on Wednesday and throughout the week.
