The New York Mets are set to sign Wandy Asigen, a top international shortstop prospect from the Dominican Republic. The 16-year-old player had initially agreed to sign with the New York Yankees but later withdrew. His contract will officially commence when the international signing period opens on January 15.
Kris Gross, the Mets’ Vice President of Amateur Scouting, played a key role in finalizing the deal. Gross has been instrumental in the team’s international free agent scouting efforts for the past two years. Asigen is widely regarded as a top-five prospect in the 2026 international class, with MLB Pipeline ranking him as the second-best prospect overall.
Asigen stands out primarily because of his exceptional bat, featuring a 65-grade hitting ability and a 60-grade power tool according to MLB Pipeline ratings. His left-handed swing is considered special, as noted by MLB Pipeline, citing his ability to generate exit velocities over 110 mph consistently during games.
Defensively, Asigen shows promise with a solid arm and above-average speed. His 6.5-second 60-yard dash highlights his athleticism and quickness, contributing to his potential at shortstop. Baseball America’s Ben Badler noted that while Asigen is still refining his defensive control, his physical tools project him as a future shortstop.
Asigen turned 16 in August and will spend the entire season playing in the Dominican Summer League at his young age. This early start will allow the Mets to closely monitor his development and maximize his growth within the organization.
The Mets’ acquisition of Asigen underscores their commitment to strengthening their international talent pipeline. Signing such a high-profile prospect could significantly impact the team’s long-term plans. Asigen’s combination of hitting power, speed, and defensive potential makes him a promising addition to the Mets’ farm system.
