The Sharing Shelf Opens New Space Designed by Drew Barrymore
The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester has introduced a new 600-square-foot space aimed at supporting its growing community. Designed by actress and television host Drew Barrymore, the area will serve as a welcome and training room for both Westchester children in need and dedicated volunteers.
Adjacent to the Teen Boutique, which opened in January, the new space supports the organization’s mission to provide clothing and confidence to young people. The Teen Boutique allows teens to select donated clothes freely in a retail-style environment. This additional space will also host clothing education sessions for teens and volunteer training to meet increasing demand.
Founded in 2009, The Sharing Shelf has expanded from a small basement operation to an 8,000-square-foot warehouse on Purdy Avenue. It provides clothing to children up to 19 years old, referred by schools and nonprofits. Volunteers and local donors support the organization heavily, with more than 75% of funding coming from individuals.
Local residents Shae and Erica Hong, founders of Made by Gather, helped make this expansion possible by facilitating the partnership with Barrymore. The Hongs also led the construction of the new area at no cost. Their involvement reflects a strong community commitment to the nonprofit’s mission.
Demand for clothing has surged by 34% compared to the previous year, driven by inflation and federal cuts to social services. The Sharing Shelf continues to offer clothing items ranging from jeans and T-shirts to prom dresses, available for collection twice a year. This growth underscores the vital role the nonprofit plays in supporting vulnerable families.
With this latest addition, The Sharing Shelf enhances both its operational capacity and its ability to empower teenagers. The organization remains a beacon of community support, driven by volunteers, donors, and creative partnerships.
