Savannah Guthrie will undergo surgery to treat vocal cord issues early next year. She disclosed on the TODAY show that she has vocal nodules and a polyp, which have caused her voice to become scratchy and crack.
Guthrie clarified that her voice problems are not due to a lingering cold. She explained, “I have vocal nodules, and now I also have a polyp. It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have surgery real early in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks.” The procedure will require her to stay silent during her recovery period.
On air, Guthrie joked about the challenge of being silent, saying, “You’ll love this, guys. I have to be silent for a couple of weeks, totally silent.” Her colleague, Sheinelle Jones, who also had vocal cord surgery, offered reassurance by highlighting the benefits of silence and rest.
Jones shared, “The silver lining is you have permission to be still. The house gets quiet. The kids are going to want to help you out.” Guthrie humorously added that she would use a dry erase board to communicate with her children, aged 9 and 11, during the silent period.
Throughout the interview, the TODAY anchors expressed support and well wishes for Guthrie’s recovery. Craig Melvin said, “Prayers for healing and recovery,” showing solidarity from the team.
Guthrie revealed she is optimistic about the surgery’s outcome. She reported, “This has been going on for years, honestly,” adding hope that her vocal abilities might improve significantly after treatment.
In addition to vocal cord issues, Guthrie has a history of health challenges related to her eyes. She previously underwent multiple surgeries for a torn retina and cataracts, which she openly shared with viewers to keep them informed.
