BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee members are advised to take immediate steps following a data breach linked to Conduent Business Services. The breach exposed sensitive personal information, affecting thousands of individuals across several states, including Tennessee.

Conduent, a third-party vendor handling back-office services such as printing and document processing, reported unauthorized access to its network from October 21 to January 13. A thorough review revealed that files containing member names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers were compromised.

Legal experts emphasize the large scope of this breach, which involves more than 10.5 million people, making it one of the largest healthcare data breaches in recent history. Brian Flick, an attorney representing plaintiffs, expressed concern over the delayed public notification, noting it took over a year to begin informing those impacted. He described the breach duration of nearly three months as unusual for such incidents.

To date, no confirmed misuse of the stolen personal data has been reported. However, experts warn that fraudulent activity often emerges 12 to 18 months after exposure. Ryan McGee, a data privacy attorney, highlights risks such as financial and healthcare fraud, urging vigilance in monitoring accounts.

Affected individuals should consider the following protective measures:

  1. Place fraud alerts or credit freezes on credit files.
  2. Regularly review bank and credit card statements for suspicious activity.
  3. Monitor credit reports for unexpected changes.
  4. Exercise caution when responding to unsolicited requests for personal information.

Conduent is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through a third-party provider. Those impacted are encouraged to enroll before March 31 to take full advantage of this protection.

Multiple class action lawsuits have already been filed against Conduent. Residents who received breach notifications from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee or Conduent may qualify to join these lawsuits. Legal representation can provide guidance on eligibility and deadlines.
