Virginia Union’s Curtis Allen Emerges as Division II’s Premier Football Player
Virginia Union running back Curtis Allen has firmly established himself as a standout performer in Division II football. He has posted exceptional numbers this season, making a strong case as the top player in the division.
Coach Alvin Parker, who leads the nation’s leading rusher, expressed no doubt about Allen’s worthiness for the prestigious Harlon Hill Award. He emphasized that Allen’s consistent weekly production speaks volumes.
Allen’s statistical dominance is impressive: 2,409 rushing yards, 204.08 all-purpose yards per game, 198.8 rushing yards per game, and 30 rushing touchdowns. He led all Division II players in every category and propelled Virginia Union to the playoffs.
The Harlon Hill Award, regarded as Division II’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, had never before been awarded to a player from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) until Allen’s candidacy. This highlights the historic nature of his achievement.
Curtis Allen acknowledged his surprise at becoming the first HBCU player to win the award, sharing credit with former teammate Jada Byers, a previous finalist. Allen described the opportunity as a blessing and a recognition of his breakout season.

Significantly, Allen set a new school single-game rushing record of 369 yards against Bluefield State on November 1. This surpassed Byers’ prior record of 324 yards. Furthermore, Allen rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season, including four games exceeding 200 yards.
Coach Parker highlighted Allen’s unique role this season, carrying much of the team’s offensive responsibility amid lost firepower. Parker called Allen the best player he’s seen at the Division II level, underscoring the running back’s all-around mastery.
