Four-Vehicle Crash on Beltway Claims Life of Baltimore Police Officer in Parkville

A fatal four-vehicle collision occurred early Saturday morning on the Inner Loop of the Baltimore Beltway at Perring Parkway in Parkville, Maryland. Maryland State Police reported the incident happened just after 8 a.m., involving multiple cars and resulting in one confirmed death.

James Beckham, 31, from Essex and an active Baltimore Police Department officer, was identified as the driver who died following the crash. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Another driver involved was also hospitalized with injuries, while two other drivers and a passenger escaped unscathed.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Officer Beckham’s vehicle struck the corner of another car, triggering a chain reaction involving two additional vehicles. This sequence of events led to the four-vehicle pileup that shut down the Inner Loop for approximately three and a half hours during the morning rush.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley expressed condolences to Officer Beckham’s family and department colleagues. “I have spoken to Officer Beckham’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time,” Worley said. “The Department stands with them and offers its deepest condolences and unwavering support.”

Authorities have not yet determined the definitive cause of the crash and continue to gather evidence. Troopers and investigators remain on site to analyze factors contributing to the collision.

The prolonged closure of the Inner Loop significantly impacted traffic flow in the Parkville area on that Saturday morning. Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes until authorities cleared the scene hours later.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement officers face, even off duty or during personal travel. The Baltimore Police Department and community mourn the profound loss of one of their own.

As investigations proceed, officials urge motorists to exercise caution and stay alert to prevent similar accidents. Updates will be provided when new information becomes available.
