Tonga’s run defense skills have helped the Patriots rank tied-fifth for rush yards allowed per game, improving from 23rd last season.
Statistically, Tonga recorded 21 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and two pass deflections through 13 games. Though his 51.5 run grade from Pro Football Focus is modest, his impact extends beyond measurable metrics. His presence demands attention in the middle of the defensive line, creating opportunities for teammates to make plays.
His effectiveness is not limited to run defense. On 173 passing snaps, Tonga generated 13 pressures, achieving an 11.7% pass rush win rate. This ranks him 31st among 128 defensive interior linemen, indicating solid pass rush capabilities. His size—standing 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 338 pounds—also allows him to serve as an extra blocker on running plays, demonstrated famously when he cleared space for a 69-yard touchdown run against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Given his surprising impact, the Patriots are urged to prioritize re-signing Tonga. Comparable players like Shelby Harris and Roy Robertson-Harris secured two-year deals worth $9 million. Tonga, as a valuable rotational lineman, could command a similar contract.
