Robert Saleh’s return to the San Francisco 49ers has reignited discussions about his future as a head coach. After being fired early in the last season by the New York Jets, Saleh worked as a consultant for the Green Bay Packers and attracted significant interest from multiple NFL teams.

General Manager John Lynch made it clear he was focused on bringing Saleh back as the defensive coordinator. Lynch said, “Whether we played with a bunch of young guys, old guys, I wanted Robert Saleh on our staff.” Saleh, who led the 49ers defense from 2017 to 2020, accepted the position after exploring head coaching opportunities with Dallas, Las Vegas, and Jacksonville.

Despite the roster challenges, including injuries to star players Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, Saleh’s defense ranks 11th in points allowed. Saleh’s adaptive approach, which emphasizes relentless effort and a focus on forcing opponents into long drives, has been key to this resilience. Saleh explained his goals clearly: “Is my desire to get to the top of the profession and hoist the Lombardi one day? Absolutely. Am I in a hurry? Saleh’s close relationship with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan also provides a support system unusual for coaches considering another head coaching leap. Shanahan noted, “I hope for us he’s not a head coach next year,” but added, “it’s only a matter of time.”
