Strange New Worlds is set to introduce two iconic characters, Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Hikaru Sulu, in its final season. Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami have been cast to portray these legendary roles in the series’ concluding episode.
Both characters have not appeared in earlier seasons since the show takes place years before the original Star Trek timeline. Fans speculated their arrival as the narrative edges closer to the classic series, completing the Enterprise crew before Captain Kirk’s command.
The series recently completed production for Season 5, which Paramount+ announced as a six-episode final installment. Although premiere dates for Seasons 4 and 5 remain undisclosed, Seasons 1 through 3 are currently streaming on Paramount+.
Thomas Jane, cast as Bones, brings extensive film and television experience to the role. His credits include notable works like The Punisher, The Predator, and Amazon’s The Expanse. Jane also recently finished filming the Western Frontier Crucible alongside Armie Hammer.
Kai Murakami, who debuts on television with this role, previously performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His stage credits include My Neighbour Totoro and the forthcoming lead role in No Longer Human, set for a 2026 stage adaptation.
Season 4 features returning cast members Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck, among others. Special guest stars Carol Kane and Paul Wesley join the ensemble, broadening the show’s appeal.
The production team includes CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers oversee the creative direction, supported by multiple executive producers such as Alex Kurtzman and Rod Roddenberry.
The final season’s inclusion of Bones and Sulu marks a significant moment for the prequel series. It promises to enrich the story as the show honors its heritage and prepares Star Trek fans for the next era of the Enterprise saga.
