The Toronto Maple Leafs will welcome back defenseman Chris Tanev for their matinee game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. Tanev has been sidelined for nearly two months due to an unspecified injury but is now ready to rejoin the lineup.
Head coach Craig Berube confirmed Tanev’s return after practice, providing a boost to a team struggling with recent results. Tanev, a 16-year veteran, has contributed two assists over eight games this season prior to his injury.
The veteran defender suffered his latest injury following a hit from behind by Matvei Michkov during a November 1 game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The impact forced Tanev to remain on the ice for several minutes before being stretchered off.
Earlier in October, Tanev also missed four games due to a concussion, making the last few weeks particularly difficult for both player and team. Speaking after his first practice back, Tanev expressed gratitude toward medical staff and teammates for their support.
“It was a weird, fluke hit, but I feel good now and am excited to be back on the ice,” Tanev said. His return could be pivotal in stabilizing the Maple Leafs’ defense.
Toronto’s recent form has been troubling as they enter this game on a three-game losing streak, having been outscored 14-4 during that span. The team has dropped five of its last six games and currently sits last in the Eastern Conference standings with a 15-15-5 record.
The Maple Leafs will rely on Tanev’s experience and steady presence as they look to arrest their decline and improve their position in upcoming matches. Tuesday’s game offers a critical opportunity to reset and regain momentum against a tough Penguins squad.
