Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are set to release Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, as part of Phase 6 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This film will mark Peter Parker’s return, played by Tom Holland, five years after his last MCU appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Brand New Day launches a new trilogy for Spider-Man, portraying a more mature and anonymous version of the wall-crawler. It also aims to explore a personal and grounded story for Peter Parker, positioning itself as one of the final movies of the Multiverse Saga.
Principal photography for Brand New Day began on August 3 in Glasgow under the working title Blue Oasis. Production highlights include a new Spider-Man suit co-designed by Holland, dynamic web-slinging scenes, and the introduction of Jon Bernthal’s armored Punisher truck. A teaser trailer might debut alongside the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere, although this is unconfirmed.
The release date was adjusted from July 24 to July 31 to create a two-week gap before Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, also starring Holland. Returning crew members include costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays, production designer Charles Wood, and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. However, Jon Watts, director of the previous Spider-Man trilogy, will not return. Instead, Destin Daniel Cretton takes on directing duties.
After the Disney-Sony deal was renewed post-No Way Home, plans for more Spider-Man films were confirmed. Holland’s involvement was secured following discussions that resumed after recent writers and actors strikes. Cretton draws inspiration from several Marvel Comics storylines, seeking to deliver a comic-accurate and vibrant adaptation. The Jackie Chan Stunt Team is contributing to the action sequences, raising expectations for high-quality fight scenes.
The confirmed cast includes Tom Holland reprising Peter Parker. Despite the memory spell in No Way Home, Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) are also expected to return. Michael Mando will bring Mac Gargan’s Scorpion back almost a decade after his MCU debut. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner’s Hulk, while Jon Bernthal reprises Frank Castle’s Punisher. Marvin Jones III joins as Lonnie Lincoln’s Tombstone. Newcomers include Sadie Sink, rumored to play multiple MCU characters, Liza Colón-Zayas in a detective role, and Tramell Tillman in an undisclosed part.
The film’s storyline draws from Marvel’s 2008 Brand New Day comics, set after the One More Day arc. It explores Peter Parker’s life with his secret identity forgotten and his history altered. The daily life at the Daily Bugle and Parker’s relationships with Aunt May and Harry Osborn are significant elements, introducing fresh dynamics for the MCU version.
Although divisive in the comics, the movie adaptation is expected to integrate the best elements of Brand New Day. A more independent and mature Peter Parker is anticipated, alongside potential team-ups with the Punisher. Rumors suggest confrontations with the Hulk or villains like Mister Negative and the Inner Demons might feature.
Brand New Day might run parallel to Avengers: Doomsday, explaining Tom Holland’s absence from the latter and potentially mirroring the timeline approach seen with Ant-Man and the Wasp and Avengers: Infinity War. This strategy deepens the unfolding Multiverse Saga while maintaining a grounded focus on Spider-Man’s personal journey.
