Having played under Belichick for two decades with the New England Patriots, Brady expressed confusion over the snub. He stated that if Belichick, whom he called “incredible,” is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, then no coach ever should be.
The duo of Brady and Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles and nine conference championships, marking one of the most successful partnerships in NFL history. Patriots owner Robert Kraft also praised Belichick, calling him “the greatest coach of all time” and affirming that he “unequivocally deserves to be a unanimous first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.”
Belichick ended his NFL coaching tenure with a remarkable 333-178 record, second only to Don Shula in all-time coaching wins. Prior to New England, he was a defensive assistant with the New York Giants, contributing to two Super Bowl victories.
Despite his achievements, Belichick’s career included controversy, particularly the 2007 Spygate scandal, where he was fined $500,000 after his team was caught filming opponents’ signals.
Brady suggested that the Hall voting process is influenced by “popularity” and other subjective factors, which he likened to “trying out for the Oscars.” Nonetheless, he is confident Belichick will eventually be enshrined, emphasizing that the timing does not diminish his legacy.
Prominent football figures like Jimmy Johnson and Patrick Mahomes also expressed disbelief over the snub, highlighting the widespread shock within the sport’s community. Belichick concluded his NFL coaching career after the 2023 season and recently began coaching at the collegiate level at North Carolina.
Armando Salguero, a senior NFL writer and Hall of Fame voter, publicly criticized the minority of voters responsible for rejecting Belichick. Salguero encouraged those selectors to reveal themselves, condemning their votes as damaging to the Hall’s integrity.
Brady predicted that when Belichick enters the Hall of Fame, the event will draw large crowds of players and coaches who respect his contributions to football. He underscored the importance of celebrating Belichick’s “commitment to winning and the impact he had on all our lives.”
The Pro Football Hall of Fame issued a statement acknowledging the strong reactions across the football community regarding the selection results. It warned that any committee members who violated bylaws during the voting process could face removal.
