Yuan Wei-ren, a renowned musician aged 57, passed away today after a prolonged illness that left him bedridden for years. His death brings an end to a 34-year career as a singer, producer, and songwriter, leaving fans and family in deep sorrow.
In 2018, Yuan Wei-ren suffered a severe accident while recording a program in Shanghai. He fell inside his room, resulting in a brain hemorrhage and a coma. During emergency treatment, doctors also discovered a brain tumor. After surgery and 62 days in a coma, he regained consciousness and was discharged to continue treatment in Taiwan. Despite being awake, he was unable to speak due to a tracheostomy.
Following his hospital stay, Yuan returned to his hometown in Taitung for rehabilitation, where his mother and sister took care of him attentively. In 2019, observers noted his considerable weight loss during physiotherapy sessions at Mackay Memorial Hospital. Though experiencing hemiplegia, he maintained a positive attitude and practiced exercises to regain mobility, including leg lifts and getting out of bed.
However, in October 2020, Yuan fell again at home while trying to rise with the support of his wheelchair. This led to another head injury and admission to the intensive care unit. His Glasgow Coma Scale score improved gradually from 3 to 6 or 7, giving hope to loved ones. Unfortunately, by 2022, he was diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state and remained bedridden. Family members provided constant care, and public updates about his condition were kept minimal.
Last November, Yuan was hospitalized again after medical tests showed elevated white blood cell counts and lung inflammation. He remained hospitalized under close observation until his passing. Yuan Wei-ren’s death marks a tragic conclusion to his long health battle, deeply affecting his family and the entertainment community.
