Sources: Chris Paul Traded to Raptors in 3-Team Deal, Raptors May Explore Further Moves Before Deadline

The LA Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, and Toronto Raptors have finalized a three-team trade that sends veteran guard Chris Paul to the Raptors. Alongside Paul, the Raptors acquire Ochai Agbaji, a 2032 second-round draft pick, and cash considerations are sent to the Nets.

According to sources, the Raptors are not expecting Chris Paul to join their active roster immediately. Discussions remain open about potentially moving Paul before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.

This trade allows Toronto to avoid paying the luxury tax this season. Brooklyn gains an additional asset in Agbaji plus cash to offset his salary, while the Clippers free up a roster spot and save approximately $7 million in luxury tax payments.

Chris Paul’s departure from the Clippers was sudden and marked the end of a significant era. Considered one of the franchise’s greatest players, Paul publicly acknowledged the separation on December 3 via social media.

Reports revealed a breakdown in communication between Paul and Clippers head coach Ty Lue in the weeks prior to the trade agreement. Paul’s role had diminished this season, appearing in only 16 games and averaging 2.9 points with 3.3 assists per contest.

The 12-time NBA All-Star has expressed readiness to retire after the conclusion of this season. In a statement to People.com, Paul said he felt “at peace” with his departure and is looking ahead to the next chapter of his life.

Ochai Agbaji, who joins Brooklyn as part of the deal, has contributed in 42 games for Toronto this season. He has started 13 times, averages 4.3 points, and grabs 2.3 rebounds per game in roughly 15 minutes of playtime.

This three-team trade primarily benefits the Raptors by clearing luxury tax liabilities while expanding their roster options. The Clippers improve their financial flexibility, and the Nets add promising young talent along with financial incentives.

Details of any further moves involving Chris Paul remain uncertain as the trade deadline approaches. The Raptors’ strategy may involve integrating Paul temporarily or leveraging his presence in additional transactions.
