Rockies Agree to One-Year Deal with Veteran Jose Quintana to Bolster Starting Rotation

The Colorado Rockies have reached an agreement to sign veteran left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana to a one-year contract, pending a physical. The deal is reportedly valued at $6 million guaranteed, adding to the Rockies’ recent acquisitions of Michael Lorenzen and Tomoyuki Sugano.

Quintana’s signing comes just before Spring Training, marking a late decision after exploring free-agency options earlier in the offseason. Previously, Quintana had agreed to a deferred $4.25 million deal with the Brewers, following a 3.75 ERA over 31 starts with the Mets. His tenure in Milwaukee yielded a 3.96 ERA across 131 2/3 innings pitched.

Pitching Profile and Performance Metrics

Over the last four seasons, Quintana’s outcomes have consistently surpassed his underlying statistics. He is not a power pitcher; his fastball velocity averages between 90-91 mph, and his strikeout rate dropped to 16% last season, the lowest since his rookie year. In fact, his swinging strike rate was only 6.9%, the second lowest among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched last season. He relies more on inducing contact rather than accumulating strikeouts.

Despite these metrics, Quintana offers a varied pitching arsenal, featuring five distinct pitches: a sinker, changeup, curveball, four-seam fastball, and slurve. This extensive mix aligns with the Rockies’ strategic focus on pitchers possessing broad arsenals. Pitching coach Alon Leichman emphasized that having multiple weapon types makes it more challenging for opposing teams to prepare, noting the advantage of unpredictability in game-planning.

Role on the Rockies’ Rotation

At age 37, Quintana is expected to stabilize the back end of Colorado’s starting rotation under manager Warren Schaeffer. He joins a rotation core that includes Kyle Freeland and the recently signed Lorenzen and Sugano. Meanwhile, youngsters Ryan Feltner and Chase Dollander are anticipated to compete for the fifth starter spot, with injury considerations potentially influencing the decision. Notably, Kriswell Jeff is on the 60-day injured list following Tommy John surgery.

The Rockies are aiming to improve drastically from the previous season, where their rotation posted a historically poor 6.65 ERA—the highest in any full MLB season. While Quintana and the other new signings are unlikely to command significant trade value midseason, they provide experienced innings and mentorship for emerging pitchers like Gabriel Hughes and Sean Sullivan.

Financial and Roster Impact

This addition increases the Rockies’ committed payroll to around $120 million, consistent with last season’s spending pace. The team will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to accommodate Quintana once the deal is finalized.

Overall, the Rockies see Quintana as a valuable depth addition capable of contributing flexibility and experience. His ability to limit walks and deploy a wide range of pitches fits Colorado’s approach, aiming to field a more competitive pitching staff in the upcoming season.
